Perfect records are fragile things, and Arsenal’s just shattered on the south coast. Brighton beat the champions 3-0 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, ending eight straight Premier League wins and handing Mikel Arteta’s side their heaviest league defeat in three years. Afterwards, Arteta accused his players of failing to “respect the game.”
Brighton vs Arsenal: Pressed Into Submission

Brighton were on top from the first minute, and Arsenal’s best start to a season in 123 years was on the line. Pascal Gross blasted the Seagulls ahead on 31 minutes. Then, on the stroke of half-time, Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the lead with a low 22-yard strike after Arsenal failed to close him down.

Nine minutes after the break, Chema Andrés headed in a Gross corner at the far post amid poor Arsenal marking, for his first Brighton goal. It could have been worse. Pascal Struijk headed wide from another corner, Matt O’Riley saw a one-on-one saved by David Raya, and Malick Yalcouye hit the woodwork.
Arteta’s Furious Verdict

Arteta did not hide behind excuses. He said Brighton were a gear above Arsenal in the basics: first duels, second balls and technique. He said his players were extremely poor on the ball in their own half against a man-to-man press, and he could sense the trouble from the first throw-in. Big chances also went begging.

He did add perspective. He said the defeat does not erase what his team has done in the six or seven weeks since the World Cup, with 18 players coming back from the tournament.
The Numbers Behind the Shock

The stats back Arteta up. According to Opta, Brighton won possession in the final third nine times, the second-highest total by any side in a Premier League game this season and the most against Arsenal in any game this term or last. Opta also notes that seven of Arsenal’s last 18 league goals conceded came from outside the box, including three of the four this season. Both Gross and Kostoulas scored from distance.
Hurzeler’s Brighton Climb to Third

For Fabian Hurzeler, this was special. Brighton are third, two points behind Arsenal, and their 16 goals in five games is the highest by any Premier League side since Manchester City scored 19 at the start of 2022-23. Hurzeler said his team were horrible to play against, and that they did the basics right.
What Next for Arsenal?

Arsenal now have 21 days to think about it, with the international break starting immediately. Manchester City can go three points clear with a win over Sunderland on Sunday. Arteta says the lesson is clear and it cannot happen again.

Champions rarely stay perfect for long, and this is where character is tested. Arsenal must respond with hard work and belief, or the title race gets very interesting.
