Manchester United have a gift for drama, and this week they outdid themselves. Captain Bruno Fernandes publicly criticised manager Michael Carrick, got dropped, watched United lose 3-0 from the bench, and is now linked with Atletico Madrid. Then the twist: after crunch talks, the board decided Carrick stays, even though he was widely expected to be sacked. Welcome to Fernandes vs Carrick.
What Fernandes Said After Como

It all started in Italy. After a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, Fernandes said Carrick was responsible for United’s lack of pressing. Gary Neville called the comments devastating and a direct attack on the manager.
Carrick Drops His Captain

The manager responded with his team sheet. Fernandes started on the bench against Bournemouth, with Carrick calling it “a football decision” and giving the armband to Harry Maguire.

The captain stayed there for the whole 3-0 defeat. Neville said the dressing room would be toxic, and he was not alone. Jamie Carragher called Carrick’s position untenable.
The Board’s Surprise Decision

Everyone expected a sacking. Instead, The Athletic reports United decided to give Carrick more time after Monday talks involving Sir Jim Ratcliffe, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

Reports say fan support played a part, along with reservations about Antonio Conte, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann as replacements. That is not exactly a vote of total confidence. There is no indication Carrick’s long-term future is secure. Call it a reprieve with strings attached.
Fernandes to Atletico Madrid: What We Know

Meanwhile, the captain’s future looks shaky. Spanish outlet Fichajes reports the 32-year-old is considering leaving, with Atletico Madrid accelerating a January move. He has 111 goals and 109 assists in 338 United games, and Transfermarkt values him at 35 million euros.

Sports Illustrated also reports United could sell him as early as January. Treat it as a report, not a done deal. After the Bournemouth loss, he reportedly liked an Instagram post about loyal people being taken for granted.
Was Fernandes Right All Along?

Here is the awkward part for United. One analysis argued his comments were rightly condemned, but the point behind them had substance. United sit 16th in the Premier League. Whoever is right, a captain and manager at war is not a recipe for recovery.
What Happens Next

The pressure shifts to the pitch. Carrick will plan for the trip to Chelsea as normal. Before the November international break, United also host Roma in the Champions League and Aston Villa in the league. Three matches could decide whether the board’s patience lasts, and whether Fernandes returns to the team.

Whatever happens, the Fernandes vs Carrick saga will shape United’s season and January transfer plans. Stay with us for every update.
