Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth was not just a bad afternoon. It was a siren blaring over Old Trafford. Michael Carrick benched captain Bruno Fernandes, watched Bournemouth tear his side apart, and walked off with United 16th in the Premier League, winless in eight games and just one point above the relegation zone. The question is no longer whether change is coming. It is how fast.
The Fernandes Gamble

The drama started before kickoff. Fernandes had questioned Carrick’s tactics after the 4-1 Champions League thrashing at Como, which Gary Neville called a direct attack on the manager.

Carrick insisted that leaving him out was purely football. Few believed it. Fernandes then sat out the full 90 minutes, even with United 2-0 down at the break. At half-time Carrick sent on Matheus Cunha for Youri Tielemans instead. By Yahoo Sports’ count, it was the sixth time Fernandes has been benched since he joined in 2020.
How Bournemouth Cut United Open

Marco Rose’s side arrived fresh from a 3-0 Europa League win over AC Milan on Thursday, and they smelled blood. Ayden Heaven was booked for a reckless challenge, and from the free-kick Rayan slashed Bournemouth ahead in the 38th minute.

Five minutes later Leny Yoro slipped, Adrien Truffert found Marcus Tavernier, and it was 2-0.
United’s first shot on target came late in the half, from Bryan Mbeumo. By then the visiting fans were singing that Carrick would be sacked in the morning.

The second half was worse. Bournemouth had a goal ruled out for offside within seconds of the restart. Then, in the 71st minute, Evanilson outpaced the defence, rounded goalkeeper Senne Lammens and curled home from an improbable angle. Old Trafford was already emptying.
Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth by the Numbers

- Winless in eight games in all competitions
- 16th in the table, one point above the drop zone
- Bournemouth’s third 3-0 win at Old Trafford in four seasons
- Zero minutes for the club captain
Is Carrick Finished?
After the final whistle Carrick walked the pitch, patted his chest and waved to fans who sang his name. “I take the responsibility,” he said, adding that he would have to wait and see what happens next. The real anger was aimed at the Glazers, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox.

Sky Sports reports that insiders expect Carrick to be relieved of his duties, with Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe named as frontrunners. At the time of writing I found no official announcement from United.
What Comes Next for Man Utd

Next up is a trip to Chelsea on Saturday 31 October at 12:30 GMT, followed by Roma in the Champions League on 3 November. Whoever sits in the dugout, United need more than hope. They need a plan, because faith without works is dead.
Where does this go from here? Should Carrick stay or go? Tell us in the comments.
