Real Madrid 2-1 Barcelona was the Clásico nobody saw coming, and Kylian Mbappé made sure nobody forgets it. At a roaring Camp Nou on Sunday night, the France star scored in each half, snatched the 87th-minute winner, and reached his 100th goal for Madrid in just 116 games. Barcelona’s perfect start to the La Liga season is over, and the title race just woke up.
A Lucky Break Before Half-Time

Madrid arrived short-handed. Vinícius Júnior was suspended and Thibaut Courtois was out with flu, so Andriy Lunin got a late call-up in goal. For 40 minutes Hansi Flick’s side pushed, yet Raphinha’s efforts never truly tested him.

Then football showed its cruel side. Yan Diomandé whipped in a low cross, Gerard Martín tried to clear it, and the ball cannoned off Mbappé and into the net in the 41st minute. Pure luck. Sometimes heaven hands you one, and you simply say thank you.
Raphinha Answers Back

Barcelona were chasing history, because no team in Europe’s top five leagues has ever opened a season with ten straight wins. Just after the hour, Raphinha took a snap shot inside the box that squeezed between Jude Bellingham’s legs and under Lunin’s arm. It was 1-1, and a frantic final half-hour began. Lunin then denied a Martín header, a save that may have saved Madrid’s night.
Mbappé Delivers the Knockout Blow

With three minutes left, Madrid broke at lightning speed. Eduardo Camavinga fed Mbappé, who slotted calmly into an empty net in the 87th minute. Camp Nou fell silent. On the touchline, José Mourinho celebrated with a knee slide, an image that will travel the internet for days.
Mbappé by the Numbers
The statistics are ridiculous:

- 100 goals and 15 assists in 116 Madrid appearances, or 0.86 goals per game
- 14 goals in 13 matches this season
- 14 goals in 11 games against Barcelona across all competitions
- Two La Liga Clásico braces for Madrid, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo or Karim Benzema managed
Mourinho’s Plan Beats Barcelona’s Flow

Mourinho returned to the Clásico after 13 years and won, his sixth victory over Barcelona across two spells. His team was organised, patient and direct. “We won with composure and fully deserved the victory,” he said. Barcelona midfielder Pedri admitted his side were not themselves in the first half.
La Liga Table: Madrid Back in the Fight

Barcelona still lead with 27 points, but their cushion has shrunk from six points to three. Atlético Madrid are second on 25, and Real Madrid are third on 24 after ten games. Tonight, the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London could add another chapter, with Mbappé and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal among the contenders.
