NEW: Manchester United’s Carabao Cup Horror Show: How Brighton Turned a 2-0 Lead Into a 3-2 Nightmare at Old Trafford

Manchester United fans walked into Old Trafford on Wednesday night dreaming of a routine Carabao Cup win. They walked out booing their own team into the tunnel. That is how fast football can turn, and that is exactly what happened when Brighton & Hove Albion produced one of the great comeback wins of the season, beating Manchester United 2-3 after trailing 2-0 inside the first ten minutes.

A Perfect Start That Fell Apart

Give credit where it belongs. Nineteen-year-old Shea Lacey and Mason Mount had United flying, striking twice in the opening ten minutes to put Michael Carrick’s men firmly in control. For a moment, it looked like a comfortable night, another step toward the fourth round, another reason for Old Trafford to believe again after a rocky start to the season.

Then United stopped playing. From the tenth minute to full time, they managed just one shot on target. One. Brighton, sensing blood, grew bolder by the minute. Fabian Hurzeler’s side clawed one back right before halftime through Charalampos Kostoulas, then ripped the game apart in a brutal twenty-minute spell after the break.

Pascal Gross converted from close range, and substitute Diego Gomez set up Maxim De Cuyper for the winner that silenced, then enraged, Old Trafford.

A Record Broken After 50 Years

This was not just another cup exit. It was history, for all the wrong reasons. Manchester United had led by two goals at home 145 times since the Premier League era began in 1992, winning 143 of those matches. Wednesday made it 143 out of 146. You have to go back to a 3-2 defeat to Tottenham in 1976, half a century ago, to find the last time United blew a two-goal home lead like this.

Add in the controversial Manchester derby defeat to ten-man Manchester City just days earlier, and United have now lost three of their opening six matches across all competitions. The pressure on Michael Carrick, appointed on a permanent deal after a promising interim spell, has never been higher.

Carrick Takes the Blame

To his credit, Carrick did not hide from it. “We can’t accept that as a group. I take responsibility for it,” he said afterward, admitting the second-half capitulation was “unacceptable.” He even accepted the fans’ boos as fair. “I totally understand the feelings of the supporters. I totally accept it. It’s on me ultimately.”

Strong words. Now United need strong performances to match them, starting with a trip to Fulham this Sunday, their last game before the international break.

What This Means for Man United’s Season

Sitting 13th in the Premier League table and now out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle for the second straight year, this is already shaping up as a season of hard questions at Old Trafford. Brighton, a club United have now been eliminated by in two different cup competitions inside nine months, continue to be a thorn in their side.

For a club with United’s history and expectations, moral victories from 2-0 leads count for nothing. The only thing that matters now is the response, and Sunday cannot come soon enough.
