NEW: Chelsea 6-3 Leeds United: Inside The Wildest Carabao Cup Comeback Of The Season

Stamford Bridge witnessed pure football theatre on Wednesday night as Chelsea produced one of the most stunning comebacks in recent Carabao Cup history, turning a two-goal deficit into a thumping 6-3 victory over Leeds United in the competition’s third round.

For 48 minutes, this looked like a cup shock in the making. Xabi Alonso had rotated heavily, handing starts to fringe players and even a 16-year-old debutant, and Leeds punished the changes ruthlessly.

Tarik Muharemovic rose highest to head the visitors in front in the 23rd minute, and three minutes into the second half, Brenden Aaronson doubled the advantage. At 2-0 down, with a patched-up lineup on the pitch, Chelsea’s Carabao Cup campaign was staring down the barrel.

Then Alonso rolled the dice. Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James were sent on together at the break, and the switch transformed the contest almost instantly.

Chelsea’s response was breathtaking. Palmer halved the deficit from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute after Pep Chavarria was hauled down in the box, then needed just two more minutes to level the score with a beautifully curled finish from the edge of the area. Suddenly, Stamford Bridge was roaring.

Morgan Rogers, the architect of the turnaround, kept pulling the strings. His clever touch sent Pedro Neto through in the 60th minute, and the winger curled a left-footed effort into the bottom corner to complete the turnaround at 3-2.

Danny Welbeck made it four just five minutes later, finishing off another Rogers assist in style.

Leeds refused to fold quietly. Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back in the 75th minute to make it 4-3 and briefly threatened another twist, but Chelsea slammed the door shut.

Valentin Barco scored his first goal for the club in the 80th minute to restore a two-goal cushion, and Welbeck completed his brace deep into stoppage time to seal a remarkable 6-3 scoreline.

By full time, Rogers had a hand in four of Chelsea’s six goals, an extraordinary impact for a substitute, while Palmer and Welbeck both walked away with braces. Nine goals, seven of them arriving in a frantic second-half spell, made this one of the standout Carabao Cup ties of the entire round.

Speaking afterward, Alonso was refreshingly honest about the sluggish start, taking full responsibility for the rotated side’s slow build-up and crediting the Stamford Bridge crowd for lifting the players when it mattered most. It was his first real cup test since taking charge, and while the opening 45 minutes will have caused a few nerves, the response showed exactly the depth and character this Chelsea squad now possesses.

Leeds can hold their heads up despite the exit. Farke’s side were sharp, well-organised, and level with a heavyweight opponent for the best part of an hour before Chelsea’s game-changers arrived off the bench.

Chelsea now march into the Carabao Cup fourth round and shift focus back to the Premier League, where they travel to face Hull City this weekend looking to carry this attacking momentum into another statement performance.
