NEW: Man City 2-0 Porto: Haaland Brace Gives Maresca A Winning Champions League Start

Manchester City needed a late twist to make their Champions League opener comfortable, and Erling Haaland delivered exactly that. City beat Porto 2-0 away at the Estadio do Dragao on September 8, and while the scoreline looks routine on paper, this was a night that had to be earned the hard way before Haaland sealed it in style.

Haaland Breaks The Deadlock After The Break

The first half in Porto was a tense, goalless affair, with the Portuguese side holding firm against their unbeaten home record for the year. That resistance cracked three minutes after the restart. Erling Haaland struck in the 47th minute to give City the lead they had been chasing, silencing a crowd that had shown up ready to cause an upset. It was the kind of early second-half punch that shifts the entire momentum of a European night, and City sensed the opportunity to control the game from there.

Porto Push Back, Then Haaland Ends The Contest

Rather than fold, Porto roared back into the match and carved out several clear-cut chances of their own, forcing City into a nervy final stretch. The hosts had every reason to believe an equalizer was coming.

Instead, Haaland made sure the door stayed shut. Deep into stoppage time, Rayan Ait-Nouri drove into the box from the left flank and squared the ball across goal, and Haaland finished first-time with his right foot to make it 2-0 and put the result beyond doubt. The goal capped a personal statement performance from the Norwegian striker in his first Champions League appearance under new boss Enzo Maresca.

Tempers flared in the closing stages too, with Porto’s Pablo Rosario booked for a foul on Haaland before the two clashed and Haaland himself picked up a yellow card in the aftermath, both players now a booking away from a suspension.

A Statement Start Under Maresca

This result matters beyond the three points. It marks Manchester City’s first Champions League victory under Enzo Maresca, who inherited a squad still hunting to reclaim the continental dominance that delivered the club’s first European crown back in 2022-23. City arrived in Porto in strong form, having won all three of their opening Premier League fixtures, including a recent 1-0 win over Coventry City, and this win extends an extraordinary European pedigree. City are now into their 14th consecutive Champions League campaign, having featured in every edition since 2011-12 and reached the knockout stages in eleven straight seasons.

Why This Win Sets The Tone

Opening a new Champions League league phase away from home against a side unbeaten at their own stadium all year is never a formality, no matter the eventual scoreline. Porto made City work for every inch of it, and for a long stretch after halftime, the tie looked capable of swinging either way. That City found the answer through their most reliable source, a clinical Haaland finish, will be exactly the kind of statement Maresca wants his players carrying into the rest of the campaign.

With Real Madrid, Arsenal, and other continental heavyweights also kicking off their own league phase campaigns this week, Manchester City’s win in Porto sends an early signal that this squad still intends to be judged by European silverware, not just domestic form. The next test will show whether Maresca’s side can turn nervy nights like this one into the kind of comfortable, dominant performances City fans have grown used to.

Man of the Match: Haaland
