NEW: UEFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi After Fenerbahce’s Chaotic Win Over Lyon

Fenerbahce finally broke an 18-year Champions League drought, and within hours the celebration turned into a full-blown disciplinary storm. UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi, along with the club itself, after wild post-match scenes followed the Turkish giants’ Champions League playoff win over Lyon. What should have been a night of pure joy in Istanbul is now heading to a UEFA hearing room.

How It All Started

Fenerbahce beat Lyon 2-1 at the Groupama Stadium to complete a 3-2 aggregate victory, sending the club into the Champions League league phase for the first time in nearly two decades. It should have been a straightforward story about redemption and progress. Instead, the headlines shifted almost immediately to the chaos that erupted once the final whistle blew.

Guendouzi and Greenwood, both former Olympique Marseille players, found themselves at the center of the storm. Marseille and Lyon are fierce Ligue 1 rivals, and that history added serious fuel to an already tense night.

What Actually Happened

According to widespread reporting, Guendouzi raised his middle finger toward Lyon supporters both during the warmup and after the final whistle, shouted “Allez l’OM” in celebration of his old club, and made an obscene gesture toward the home crowd. He later claimed Lyon fans had insulted his family throughout the match, giving his side of a story that quickly spiraled out of control.

The situation escalated fast. A person dressed in Lyon colors reportedly confronted Guendouzi, and what followed was a genuine scuffle involving players and staff from both sides in the tunnel area. Some reports even describe an attempted flying kick aimed at Guendouzi amid the confrontation. Lyon supporters also attempted to storm the pitch during Fenerbahce’s celebrations, turning a routine post-match handshake into genuine mayhem.

Fenerbahce’s Official Response

Fenerbahce confirmed the situation directly, stating that UEFA had launched proceedings against Guendouzi, Greenwood, and the club following the second leg. The Turkish side did not shy away from the news, releasing a statement promising to defend both players through the proper UEFA channels. The club said it would submit all relevant information, documents, and defenses to protect the interests of its players and the institution itself, while continuing to closely monitor how the case develops.

Timing Could Not Be Worse

Here is where things get genuinely tense for Fenerbahce fans. It remains unclear whether UEFA’s disciplinary judges will issue a ruling before the club’s Champions League league phase opener, a home fixture against Roma just days away. A second match at Aston Villa follows shortly after in October. If either player is hit with a suspension, Fenerbahce could be forced into their long-awaited European return without two key contributors, with Greenwood having already scored twice and assisted once in six European appearances this season.

What Happens Next

UEFA disciplinary cases can move quickly or drag on for weeks depending on the severity of the charges. For now, both players remain available while the process unfolds behind the scenes. One thing is certain: Fenerbahce’s return to Europe’s top table has already produced more drama off the pitch than most clubs experience in an entire campaign, and the football world will be watching closely to see how UEFA responds.
