NEW: Enzo Fernandez to Man City: Inside the Record-Equaling £125 Million Transfer Shaking Up the Premier League

Manchester City just made a statement, and it came with a price tag that stopped the football world in its tracks. Enzo Fernandez has completed his move to Manchester City from Chelsea in a deal worth £125 million, a fee that ties the British transfer record. After more than three and a half years at Stamford Bridge, the Argentine World Cup winner is heading to the Etihad, and the timing, the reunion, and the money involved all make this one of the biggest storylines of the transfer window.

The Deal That Matches a British Record

City agreed to pay Chelsea £125 million for Fernandez, a figure that matches what Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak just a year earlier. Chelsea actually walked away with five million pounds more than their original asking price, turning a tidy profit on the £107 million they spent to sign him from Benfica back in 2023. Fernandez has now put pen to paper on a five-year deal at City, locking in his future at the Etihad through the rest of the decade.

A Reunion With Enzo Maresca

Part of what makes this transfer so compelling is the man waiting for him on the touchline. Fernandez is reuniting with Enzo Maresca, the manager who guided him at Chelsea and who now carries the weighty task of succeeding Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The two Enzos already have chemistry, and Maresca reportedly pushed hard behind the scenes to get this deal over the line after City’s midfield underwent a dramatic overhaul this summer.

Why City Needed a Midfield Rebuild

City’s business this transfer window has been nothing short of aggressive. The club lost Rodri to Barcelona, waved goodbye to Bernardo Silva, and saw both Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders head out the door as well. To fill the gap, City brought in Elliot Anderson and teenage sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi before capping it off with Fernandez, pushing their combined midfield spending north of £300 million. City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, did not hold back in his praise, calling Fernandez a complete midfielder who is technically gifted, hardworking, and a proven goalscorer.

From World Cup Hero to Etihad Newcomer

Fernandez’s résumé speaks for itself. He was a key figure in Argentina’s triumphant 2022 World Cup run, scoring twice on that unforgettable stretch, including a stunner in the semifinal against England. His Chelsea career included Conference League and Club World Cup glory, but his final months at Stamford Bridge grew tense after links to Real Madrid surfaced and fans turned on him during preseason. A fresh start at City, in a rebuilt midfield alongside familiar faces, could not have come at a better time.

What This Means Going Forward

With Jeremy Doku sidelined through injury and City already off to a strong start under Maresca, winning their first two matches while scoring six goals, Fernandez slots into a side hungry to reclaim the Premier League title from Arsenal. Whether he plays as a deep-lying playmaker or further forward, his arrival gives City the flexibility and firepower they have been chasing all summer. This transfer is not just about the fee. It is about a club rebuilding with purpose, and a player getting the reset he needed. Manchester City fans have every reason to be excited.
