UEFA vs Infantino: Why Europe’s Football Giants Are Dragging FIFA’s President to Court

Football politics just got its most explosive plot twist of 2026. UEFA, the powerhouse governing European football, is preparing a full-blown criminal complaint against FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the Swiss courts. Yes, you read that right — the man at the top of world football’s biggest institution is now staring down the barrel of a potential criminal case, and the story behind it reads like a boardroom thriller.

What Sparked This Football Earthquake?

At the center of this storm is a controversial $4.2 billion plan Infantino allegedly pushed to sell a 20 percent stake in FIFA Forward Enterprise, the subsidiary that runs FIFA’s commercial empire, including the World Cup itself. The buyers lined up were Thrive Capital Management, the New York investment fund founded by Josh Kushner.

UEFA’s legal team isn’t holding back. In a 60-page legal document, their lawyers state that they are contemplating a Swiss criminal proceeding against Infantino, citing Article 158 of the Swiss Criminal Code — the same statute used against disgraced former FIFA boss Sepp Blatter a decade ago. The claim is that the $4.2 billion price tag was suspiciously below fair market value, potentially benefiting Infantino and a small inner circle rather than FIFA and its 55 European member federations.

The Backlash That Forced Infantino’s Hand

This didn’t come out of nowhere. Once details of the plan leaked, football’s power brokers erupted. UEFA threatened to boycott FIFA-run competitions entirely unless the plan was scrapped. National federations piled on too — Italy’s FIGC and Romania’s FRF both publicly pulled their support for Infantino’s expected reelection bid in March, with Romanian federation president Răzvan Burleanu bluntly saying football needs “a new leader who can produce consensus and unity.”

Facing mounting pressure from nearly every corner of the sport, Infantino officially withdrew the sell-off plan on August 1. But UEFA wasn’t satisfied with a simple retreat. They wanted answers, and now they want accountability.

Why This Matters for the Game

UEFA has since filed for legal discovery in a Manhattan court and in southern Florida, aiming to unearth internal communications, financial records, and any evidence tied to how this deal was structured. UEFA’s official statement raises a pointed question: with FIFA expected to close the 2023-26 commercial cycle with around $5 billion in cash reserves after a record $15 billion in revenue, why did Infantino feel the need to bring in outside investors at all?

That question alone captures the tension driving this saga. It’s not just about one deal — it’s about trust, transparency, and who really controls the future of the world’s most powerful sport.

History has not been kind to prosecutors chasing FIFA officials in Switzerland. Blatter, former UEFA boss Michel Platini, and PSG president Nasser al-Khelaïfi were all acquitted after previous Swiss trials, so UEFA faces an uphill legal battle if this complaint is formally filed.

Still, the symbolism is massive. Ten years after Infantino promised to clean up FIFA following the Blatter era, he now finds himself accused of the very kind of backroom dealing he was elected to end. With his reelection bid approaching in March and confederations already withdrawing support, this crisis could define whether Infantino survives at the top of world football.

One thing is certain — this is far from over, and every football fan should be watching closely as this legal battle threatens to reshape the balance of power in the sport we love.
