Barcelona’s search for a new striker has taken a dramatic turn, and the name now dominating the conversation is Lautaro Martinez. With the summer transfer window closing on September 1, Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco have made the Inter Milan captain their number one priority, setting up one of the most fascinating transfer sagas of the window.
Why Barcelona Turned to Lautaro Martinez

The road to Lautaro began with a different name entirely. Barcelona spent much of the summer chasing Julian Alvarez, only for Atletico Madrid to flatly refuse to negotiate his departure.

With that door firmly closed, Deco pivoted quickly, and Lautaro Martinez emerged as the club’s new top target. According to Jijantes journalist Gerard Romero, Lautaro is now the name Flick and Barca are working to close, calling it priority number one despite acknowledging it will be a very difficult operation.

The urgency is real. Barcelona lost Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres this summer, leaving a gaping hole at center forward that even summer signings like Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi cannot fill on their own. Flick reportedly views Lautaro as a stylistic match for his high-intensity attacking system, someone who can occupy center backs, press relentlessly, and still drop deep to link play alongside Lamine Yamal.
The Inter Milan Wall

Here is where the story gets complicated. Multiple Italian outlets, including Sky Sport Italia and Gianluca Di Marzio, report that Inter Milan have made their stance unmistakably clear: Lautaro Martinez is not for sale. As club captain, he is considered central to Inter’s project both on the pitch and in the dressing room, and reports suggest the Nerazzurri learned of Barcelona’s interest through the Spanish press rather than any formal approach.

Adding to the difficulty, Lautaro signed a contract extension that runs until 2029, and crucially, his release clause was removed as part of that renewal. That means any deal has to be negotiated directly with Inter rather than triggered by a fixed payment, giving the Italian side enormous leverage. Transfermarkt currently values him at around 85 million euros, though reports suggest Inter could demand figures closer to 120 million euros if they ever entertained an offer at all.
Would Lautaro Actually Leave Milan?

Despite Inter’s resistance, there are signs the door is not completely shut. Spanish outlet Sport claims Lautaro would be thrilled by the chance to join Barcelona and compete for major trophies and individual honors. Deco reportedly met with the striker’s agent, Alejandro Camano, in Madrid to gauge genuine interest, and his camp is said to have signaled openness to the move.

Still, this remains a striker who has spent eight seasons building a legacy in Milan, captaining the club and forming a deep connection with its fans. Fabrizio Romano has described the mood around Inter and Lautaro’s camp as calm, with no indication the club is preparing for his exit.
What Happens Next

With less than two weeks left in the window, Barcelona face a race against time. If Lautaro proves unreachable, names like Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen, and Georges Mikautadze remain on the club’s radar as alternatives. For now, though, all eyes are on whether Barcelona can pull off one of the boldest striker signings of the summer, and whether Inter Milan can be convinced to let their captain go.
