NEW: Chelsea’s Cursed Number 9 Shirt: Can Joao Pedro Finally Break the Spell

Some shirts carry legacy. Chelsea’s number 9 carries baggage. For nearly two decades, the jersey has swallowed one big-money forward after another, and now it belongs to Joao Pedro, the club’s reigning Player of the Year. The question dividing Stamford Bridge right now is simple: has Chelsea finally found the man to end the curse, or is their brightest attacking talent about to become its latest victim?

A Curse Written In Broken Careers

The list of names is genuinely staggering when you line them up together. Hernan Crespo, Fernando Torres, Radamel Falcao, Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain, Romelu Lukaku, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all arrived at Chelsea as the number 9 with reputations built on goals scored elsewhere, and all of them, to varying degrees, failed to deliver what was expected once they pulled on that specific shirt.

Even Thomas Tuchel, hardly a superstitious man by trade, openly admitted the dressing room believed in it. Speaking after Lukaku’s underwhelming spell ended in a return to Inter Milan, Tuchel told reporters that nobody wanted to touch the number nine, joking that longtime staff kept telling him story after story of forwards who wore it and simply stopped scoring.

The shirt sat unclaimed for stretches precisely because of that reputation. Players who might otherwise have jumped at the iconic number instead steered clear an example of such players are Drogba and Diego Costa who opted for the No 19 jersey leaving No 9 vacant or handed to squad players until a big enough name was willing to gamble on it.

Joao Pedro Steps Into The Firing Line

That changes now. Chelsea have officially confirmed their squad numbers for the new season, and Joao Pedro has been handed the 9, taking it from Liam Delap, who managed just three goals in 47 appearances after inheriting the shirt himself just last year.

Pedro’s promotion is no accident. After arriving from Brighton for a reported 60 million pounds, he exploded in his first season at Stamford Bridge, finishing as Chelsea’s Player of the Year with 20 goals and nine assists across all competitions. He has openly said the number nine is where he has always belonged, telling the club’s official site that it has been his natural position since his earliest days, even if his technical ability lets him drift wide or drop deeper when needed.

Reaction has been split right down the middle. Some supporters are thrilled a player already proven at the club is finally taking the shirt on merit rather than reputation alone. Others are nervous, with some fans publicly fretting that even Pedro’s excellent debut campaign will not be enough to escape the pattern that has swallowed so many gifted forwards before him.

Writing A New Chapter

There is a case for optimism that has nothing to do with superstition. Unlike Torres, Falcao, or Aubameyang, Pedro is not walking into an unfamiliar dressing room chasing a reputation built somewhere else. He is already Chelsea’s most in-form attacker, already adored by the fanbase, and already scoring freely in preseason, netting seven times across the summer schedule including a brace in the final warm-up win over Real Sociedad. If anyone at Stamford Bridge is positioned to finally silence the number 9 talk for good, it may well be the player who has already proven he can perform in Chelsea colors before the shirt swap ever happened.

Whether folklore or coincidence, the number 9 curse has become part of Chelsea’s modern identity. Joao Pedro now carries the weight of that history on his back, quite literally, every time he steps onto the pitch this season.
