NEW: Chelsea Ownership Shake-Up: Boehly and Walter in Talks to Sell Stakes to Clearlake

Chelsea ownership story is about to enter a completely new chapter. Chairman Todd Boehly and fellow shareholder Mark Walter are reportedly in talks to sell their stakes in the club to majority owner Clearlake Capital, a move that could hand the private equity firm total control of Stamford Bridge just four years after the club changed hands. If this deal goes through, it will be the biggest ownership shift at Chelsea since Roman Abramovich was forced out in 2022.

What The Reports Say

According to the Financial Times, Boehly and Walter have discussed selling their respective 12.8 percent holdings to Clearlake, who currently control 61.5 percent of the club. That would leave Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss as the only minority owner from the original BlueCo consortium still standing, since it remains unclear whether he intends to sell alongside the other two. Sources told ESPN that no agreement has been reached and that talks could still fall apart, but momentum has clearly picked up in recent weeks. Any deal is reportedly being discussed at a valuation north of five billion pounds, more than double the 2.5 billion pounds the consortium paid to buy the club in 2022.

Why Now

This is not a sudden development. Sources indicate Boehly and Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali have clashed on the club’s direction for years, with tension reportedly reaching a boiling point over the decision to part ways with manager Mauricio Pochettino. Boehly wanted him to stay, Clearlake did not, and that disagreement is widely viewed as a turning point in an increasingly strained relationship. There have also been reported differences over plans for a new Stamford Bridge and the club’s broader recruitment strategy.

Walter’s situation adds another layer entirely. He recently completed the sale of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers just fourteen months after buying the franchise, and reports indicate the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating his broader business empire, including whether billions of dollars in loans tied to his companies were improperly routed. That scrutiny appears to be accelerating his exit from sports ownership altogether.

What Happens If The Deal Goes Through

If Clearlake successfully buys out Boehly and Walter, the private equity firm would consolidate power in a way that could finally simplify Chelsea’s notoriously complex governance structure, where major decisions have required agreement across multiple stakeholders. Some fans and analysts see that as a positive, arguing that a single controlling voice could speed up decision-making after a stretch defined by managerial churn and nearly 1.5 billion pounds in transfer spending without a Premier League or Champions League trophy to show for it. Boehly is already expected to step down as chairman in 2027 under a pre-existing agreement, so this move could simply be accelerating a transition that was already on the horizon.

The Bigger Picture

Chelsea’s situation is part of a wider trend sweeping football ownership. Just this week, Liverpool’s FSG confirmed selling a stake closer to 40 percent to a Jeff Bezos-backed consortium, underlining how quickly the financial landscape of the Premier League’s elite clubs is shifting.

Whether Clearlake ends up as Chelsea’s sole controlling power remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the ownership drama at Stamford Bridge is far from over, and supporters should brace for more headlines before this deal is settled one way or another.
