Manchester United just gave fans another reason to get excited about the season ahead. On Saturday, August 8, in Gothenburg, Sweden, Michael Carrick’s side battled reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw in their final pre-season friendly, and once again it was Bryan Mbeumo doing the heavy lifting.
A Nightmare Start at Nya Ullevi

United could not have scripted a worse opening. Just two minutes into the match, Liverpool-linked forward Ibrahim Mbaye swept home from close range after a slick PSG counter, stunning the Red Devils before most fans had even settled into their seats. Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia nearly doubled the damage moments later, curling an effort just wide of the post.
For a team that had looked sharp all summer, it was a jolt. But this United side has shown all pre-season that slow starts do not define them.
Mbeumo Does It Again

Just past the half-hour mark, United found their level. Amad Diallo, who was electric all afternoon, won the ball back high up the pitch and teed up Bryan Mbeumo, who finished with the composure that has quickly made him a fan favorite at Old Trafford. It was Mbeumo’s third goal in just two pre-season matches, continuing the red-hot form that has United fans buzzing about what he can do once the Premier League campaign kicks off.

The Cameroon international was relentless throughout, forcing PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov into save after save. By full time, Mbeumo had four shots on target alone, more than any other player on the pitch.
United Dominate but Cannot Find a Winner

What followed was a match that told a bigger story than the scoreline suggested. Despite missing several of their biggest stars, PSG were second best for long spells as United racked up an impressive 14 shots, seven on target. Joshua Zirkzee nearly broke through in the 73rd minute before being denied by a last-ditch clearance from Safonov, sprinting out of his box like an emergency defender. Substitute Jack Fletcher then squandered a golden chance, passing up an open net in favor of a pass that deflected wide.

The closest United came to snatching all three points arrived in the 89th minute, when returning captain Bruno Fernandes bent a gorgeous effort narrowly wide of the bottom corner.
Big Returns and a Few Worries

Beyond the scoreline, this friendly carried real significance for United’s squad building. Youri Tielemans made his club debut after coming on in the second half, showing composure and quality passing from deep. Bruno Fernandes also featured in his first pre-season minutes since returning to training, immediately looking like a threat around the box.

The one concern for Carrick will be fitness. Mason Mount was forced off after just 19 minutes, while goalkeeper Tom Heaton also failed to finish the match. Both injuries remain unclear in severity, though positive signs emerged with Mount later seen walking freely around the ground.
What It Means Going Forward

Speaking after the final whistle, Carrick described the performance as showing “good signs” for the season ahead, and it is hard to disagree. A draw against the Champions League holders, with United dominating large stretches of play, is exactly the kind of statement result that builds belief heading into the new Premier League campaign.
With pre-season now complete, all eyes turn to Old Trafford and the start of the real action.
