Chelsea fans finally got the pre-season performance they had been waiting for. On Saturday, August 8, at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Xabi Alonso’s side produced their most complete display of the summer, brushing aside AC Milan 3-0 to snap a two-match losing run and send a real statement ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Breaking a Rough Patch

The build-up to this one had not been kind to Chelsea. A 2-1 defeat to Tottenham and a toothless 1-0 loss to Juventus had left question marks over Alonso’s system just weeks before the season opener. Milan, for their part, were also winless in pre-season under new boss Ruben Amorim, meaning something had to give in Jakarta.
It did, and emphatically so.
Joao Pedro Strikes Twice in a Flash

Chelsea broke the deadlock in the most dramatic fashion, right at the end of the first half. Deep into stoppage time, Moises Caicedo whipped in a corner and Joao Pedro rose highest to glance a header into the top corner, sending the Blues into the break in front.

Whatever Alonso said at halftime clearly worked, because Chelsea were out of the traps instantly after the restart. Just one minute back underway, Pedro Neto picked out Joao Pedro at the back post, and the Brazilian forward calmly steered the ball home for his second of the night. Two goals in the space of three minutes turned a tight contest into a rout.
Caicedo Adds a Stunner

If the first two goals were clinical, the third was pure box office. In the 50th minute, Moises Caicedo received the ball after a scrambled Chelsea corner and unleashed an outside-of-the-boot volley that flew into the net from distance, a strike that immediately had fans on social media comparing it to some of the best goals of the entire pre-season across Europe.

It capped a man-of-the-match display from the Ecuadorian, who also captained the side and dropped into the back three throughout to help Chelsea control possession in Alonso’s evolving 3-4-3 setup.
A System Finally Clicking

This was widely seen as the clearest evidence yet of what Alonso is building at Stamford Bridge. Rather than the hybrid shape used in earlier friendlies, Chelsea fully committed to the back-three structure, with Romeo Lavia man-marking Luka Modric out of the game and youngster Marco Palestra impressing at left wing-back.

Milan simply had no answer. Rafael Leao caused problems with his direct running early on but was shackled effectively by Chelsea’s backline, and the Italian side never threatened a way back into the match once they fell 3-0 behind.

Even Nicolas Jackson, introduced from the bench, nearly added a fourth, rattling the woodwork after a mazy run that had the Milan defense scrambling.
What It Means Going Forward

With the Premier League season fast approaching, this was exactly the type of performance Chelsea supporters needed to see. A dominant, front-foot display against Serie A opposition, built on pressing, quick combinations, and set-piece danger, suggests Alonso’s ideas are starting to take hold.

Chelsea are back in action almost immediately, facing Johor Darul Ta’zim on Sunday, before returning to Stamford Bridge to host Real Sociedad on August 15 in their final pre-season tune-up before the new campaign kicks off.
