Football lost more than a footnote this week. On Saturday, August 8, 2026, Jorge Messi — father, agent, and lifelong protector of Lionel Messi — passed away at a clinic in Rosario, Argentina. He was 68.

For millions who only ever saw Lionel Messi lift trophies under stadium lights, Jorge Messi was the man standing quietly in the tunnel, in the stands, in the background of every major decision. His passing has pulled the football world into a rare, unified moment of grief.

How Jorge Messi Died

Jorge Messi died in the early hours of Saturday morning at Sanatorio Centro in Rosario, the city where the Messi story began. The hospital’s medical director, Dr. Carlos Mackey, confirmed the death but declined to share further medical details, citing the family’s wish for privacy.

His illness had already been in the public eye. During this year’s World Cup, the Messi family issued a statement confirming Jorge was “recovering and progressing favorably” from an undisclosed health issue. That statement came after a chaotic moment in June, when an Argentine television host wrongly announced Jorge Messi had died — a mistake so damaging it cost her the job. This time, the news was tragically real.

The Man Behind Lionel Messi’s Career

Long before he became his son’s agent, Jorge Messi was a factory supervisor in Rosario and a devoted fan of Newell’s Old Boys. That club was the first to pay tribute, calling him “the pillar” who supported, with vision and affection, the career of the greatest player of all time, alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini.

It was Jorge who negotiated the move to Barcelona when Lionel was just a teenager battling a growth hormone condition. It was Jorge who handled the contracts, the sponsorships, and the business empire that grew around his son’s fame. And it was Jorge who reportedly sat with a young Lionel in a Barcelona apartment, both of them pretending not to be homesick, both quietly crying alone so the other wouldn’t worry.

Jorge is survived by his wife and four children: Lionel, older brothers Rodrigo and Matías, and younger sister María Sol.

Football Pays Its Respects

Tributes arrived within hours. FC Barcelona thanked Jorge for entrusting the club with his son’s formative years. Real Madrid sent condolences despite decades of rivalry. UNICEF remembered him as a benefactor committed to children’s rights. The Argentine Football Association offered “the most heartfelt, warm, and affectionate embrace” to the Messi family.

On the pitch, Inter Miami wore black armbands and held a minute’s silence before their Leagues Cup match against Monterrey, with Jorge Messi’s name displayed across the stadium screens. Rodrigo De Paul held up a number 10 shirt after scoring. Rafael Nadal and countless other athletes sent messages of support across social media.

Lionel Messi himself flew to Rosario on Saturday night to attend a private memorial with his family. It is not yet known when he will return to Miami.

A Quiet Loss That Speaks Loudly

Jorge Messi never sought the spotlight, yet he shaped one of the greatest stories in sports history from just outside it. His passing is a reminder that behind every legend stands someone who believed first, sacrificed most, and asked for nothing in return.

Rest in peace, Jorge Messi.
