Some friendlies feel like friendlies. This one did not. Chelsea and Tottenham delivered a genuine slice of Premier League drama on the other side of the world, and it took a stoppage-time strike from Richarlison to settle it in Spurs’ favour.

A Derby Like No Other

For the first time in 117 years of fixtures between these two London rivals, Chelsea and Tottenham met outside the United Kingdom. The venue was Sydney’s Accor Stadium, and the occasion drew a sell-out crowd of 80,363, the final act of the Sydney Super Cup. Whatever the scoreboard said about it being preseason, nobody inside that stadium treated it that way.

Tonali Breaks His Duck, Estevao Answers Back

Tottenham struck first through Sandro Tonali, whose deflected effort in the 17th minute found the net for his first goal since his big-money move from Newcastle. It was the kind of moment new signings dream about, and Spurs fans on social media wasted no time celebrating it as an early sign of things to come under Roberto De Zerbi.

Chelsea did not take long to respond. Just four minutes later, Estevao Willian rose to head home a pinpoint cross from Jamie Gittens, levelling the score before half-time and giving Xabi Alonso’s side the platform to push for more.

Chaos After The Break

The second half turned into a story of its own. Kevin Danso, introduced at the interval, lasted barely three minutes before being shown a straight red card for hauling down Joao Pedro as he raced through on goal. Suddenly Spurs were facing the prospect of playing nearly the entire second half a man down against a Chelsea side buoyed by the numerical advantage.

For long stretches it looked like Chelsea would make that advantage count. Cole Palmer went close from a resulting free kick, and Joao Pedro forced a smart save from Antonin Kinsky. But Spurs held firm, weathered the pressure, and refused to fold.

Richarlison’s Stoppage-Time Sting

Then came the moment that will define this match in the highlight reels. In the 92nd minute, with the game seemingly drifting toward a share of the spoils, a loose ball fell to Richarlison in the box after Jamie Donley’s effort cannoned back off the post. The Brazilian did not need a second invitation, tapping home the winner to send the away end into raptures and complete a fourth straight preseason win for Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham.

Alonso’s Honest Reaction

Xabi Alonso did not sugarcoat the result afterward, admitting plainly that “losing is not something we like.” The quote has since spread widely across football social media, with fans praising the new Chelsea boss for his refreshing candour rather than hiding behind typical preseason platitudes. Alonso did, however, stress that fielding senior players for meaningful minutes mattered more than the final score at this stage of the summer.

What It Means Going Forward

Statistically, this was closer than the drama suggested. Chelsea managed just four shots on target, the same tally as ten-man Tottenham, a reminder that scorelines in August rarely tell the full story. Still, for Spurs supporters, the symbolism of beating their fiercest London rivals on the other side of the planet, with a man down for half the match, is one they will enjoy long after the flight home.

Chelsea now turn their attention to Juventus in Hong Kong, while Tottenham head back to north London still unbeaten in preseason and full of confidence heading into the new campaign.
