NEW: Ayyoub Bouaddi to Manchester City: Inside the Rodri Replacement Deal Set to Shake Up the Etihad

Manchester City think they have found the man to replace one of the best midfielders on the planet — and he is only 18 years old. Ayyoub Bouaddi, Lille’s Morocco international sensation, is edging closer to the Etihad Stadium in a transfer saga that has quietly become one of the most fascinating storylines of the summer window.

From World Cup Breakout to City’s Prime Target

Bouaddi’s rise has been rapid. A product of Lille’s academy, he has already made 96 appearances for the club despite being barely out of his teens, and his performances during Morocco’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals — a campaign that ended only in a narrow defeat to France — turned him into one of the most talked-about young midfielders in world football.

That form triggered a scramble among Europe’s elite. Arsenal, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain were all credited with interest, and the Gunners were even considered early favourites. But Manchester City moved decisively, with CEO Ferran Soriano personally meeting Lille president Olivier Létang at the end of June to signal exactly how serious the club’s intentions were. That level of executive involvement mirrors the approach that ultimately delivered the British-record £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier in the window — and it appears to be working again.

Personal Terms Done, Fee Still the Sticking Point

Here is where it gets exciting for City fans: Bouaddi has already given his personal agreement to the move. Reports indicate he has verbally agreed a contract with City running until 2031, meaning the human side of this deal is essentially settled.

What remains is the classic transfer tug-of-war over money. Lille are targeting a fee close to €100 million, while City are pushing to land the deal nearer €90 million with add-ons. It is a gap of roughly £10-15 million depending on which report you follow, but multiple sources now describe City as having genuinely closed the distance, with talks between the clubs described as “progressing well” and City having overtaken Arsenal in the race entirely.

The Rodri Connection Everyone Is Talking About

The subplot fueling this story on football social media right now is the timing. City’s pursuit of Bouaddi is widely being read as directly tied to Rodri’s expected departure for Real Madrid. Reports suggest the two deals are almost mirror images of each other: if Rodri stays at the Etihad, Bouaddi’s arrival could be delayed until 2027, with Lille keeping him on loan for further development. But if Rodri departs for Madrid as expected, City want Bouaddi in Manchester immediately to slot straight into Enzo Maresca’s rebuilt midfield.

That makes the coming days genuinely decisive for both deals at once — a rare situation where one transfer’s outcome could directly trigger the other.

Why This Move Makes Sense for Everyone

For City, signing a genuine wonderkid at 18 while also finalising Anderson’s British-record arrival shows a clear strategy under Maresca and sporting director Hugo Viana: build the midfield around control, technical quality, and long-term value rather than simply chasing the next marquee name.

For Lille, this continues a well-worn and lucrative pathway of developing elite talent before cashing in for a substantial fee — the same model that has made the French club a reliable pipeline to Europe’s biggest sides for years.

And for Bouaddi himself, the chance to inherit a role once occupied by the reigning World Cup Golden Ball winner is about as big an opportunity as football offers an 18-year-old. Watch this space — this deal is about to move fast.
