NEW: Lois Openda Lyon Loan: Juventus Cuts Its Losses on a €42m Flop

Just twelve months after Juventus paid big money to make him permanent, Lois Openda is already packing his bags. The Belgian striker is heading back to Ligue 1 on loan at Olympique Lyonnais, and the numbers behind the move tell a brutal story of a transfer gone wrong.

From €42 Million Gamble to €3.5 Million Exit

Juventus originally brought Openda in from RB Leipzig on loan ahead of the 2025-26 season, with an obligation to buy worth roughly €42.8 million that was automatically triggered on July 1. It was meant to be a statement signing, the kind of clinical, high-speed forward Serie A defenses would dread facing. Instead, Openda managed just two goals in 34 appearances as Luciano Spalletti’s Juventus missed out on Champions League qualification entirely.

Now Juventus have shipped him out on a straight loan to Lyon for a fee of just €3.5 million, with no option to buy attached. It is a dry loan running through June 30, 2027, meaning this is purely about finding Openda minutes, not setting up a permanent sale. For a club that spent nearly €43 million on him barely a year ago, that is as clear an admission of a misfire as you will find in modern football.

Why the Turin Experiment Collapsed

Openda’s struggles in Italy were not for lack of hype. He arrived off the back of a stunning debut Bundesliga season, having previously exploded onto the scene with 21 league goals in a single campaign for RC Lens, the form that convinced RB Leipzig to pay €50 million for him back in 2023. But Serie A never suited him. Limited game time, tactical restrictions, and a lack of service left him invisible for long stretches, and the fallout followed him internationally. Openda was left out of Belgium’s 2026 World Cup squad after failing to score in five qualifying matches, a brutal confirmation that his form had completely collapsed.

A Fresh Start Built for Speed

Lyon, who finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season, see something worth reviving. Their attack is built around explosive movement and direct running in behind, exactly the qualities that once made Openda one of French football’s most feared young forwards during his Lens years. Speaking to the club’s website, Openda sounded genuinely energized by the switch, saying he had “heard a lot of good things about the club and the city.”

The timing works in his favor too. Openda should have time to build fitness and sharpness during preseason friendlies before Ligue 1 action resumes, and he could make his competitive Lyon debut as early as August 4 in a Champions League third qualifying round clash against Sparta Prague.

The Redemption Arc Begins

For Juventus, this is about clearing space and stopping the bleeding on a deal that never worked. For Lyon, it is a low-risk, high-upside audition for a player with proven top-flight pedigree. And for Openda himself, this is nothing less than a chance to remind Europe why RB Leipzig once paid €50 million for him in the first place. Ligue 1 has seen this version of Openda before. Now it gets to find out if he can bring it back.
