John Stones to Inter Milan: How a Free Agent Legend Snubbed the Premier League

John Stones walked away from Manchester City this summer as a free agent, and the transfer merry-go-round that followed has ended in a destination few saw coming. After a decade of trophies at the Etihad, the England international has verbally agreed to join Inter Milan, choosing Serie A over three separate suitors back home in the Premier League.

The Deal Taking Shape in Milan

According to Sky Sports in Italy and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Stones has given the green light to Inter’s proposal, with his representatives now finalizing terms on a two-year contract that includes the option of a third year. Reports place his salary at around four million euros per season. A medical in Milan is expected shortly, with formalities set to wrap up in the coming days.

The move represents a genuine coup for Inter boss Cristian Chivu, who has been searching for defensive reinforcements all summer. Stones is expected to step into the void left by Stefan De Vrij, who recently departed for Greece, bringing a wealth of experience to an Inter side aiming to reclaim the Serie A title and go deep in Europe once again.

Beating Arsenal and Chelsea to the Punch

What makes this transfer especially juicy is who Stones turned down. Both Arsenal and Chelsea had registered serious interest, with Chelsea’s need for center-back depth under new manager Xabi Alonso particularly pressing. Juventus also made contact with Stones’ camp over the weekend, only to watch Inter close the deal first. Reports suggest Inter’s pursuit of Stones may now end their interest in Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, a target valued far higher than a free transfer.

For Arsenal, the swing and miss stings a little more given William Saliba’s extended injury absence, leaving the Gunners short at the back just as one of the Premier League’s most decorated defenders slipped through their fingers.

A Decorated Career Finding a New Chapter

Stones joined Manchester City from Everton in 2016 for 47.5 million pounds, a fee that made him the second-most expensive defender in the world at the time. He went on to make 295 appearances for the club, chipping in 19 goals and nine assists while helping City assemble one of the most dominant trophy hauls English football has ever seen, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League crown.

Injury troubles limited him to just 16 appearances in his final City season, which explains why some Serie A clubs were initially cautious about his fitness and wage demands. Inter, however, have decided the upside of adding a player with Stones’ composure, defensive intelligence, and ball-playing ability outweighs the risk.

Why This Move Makes Sense for Everyone

Stones brings the kind of tactical versatility that fits perfectly into Chivu’s system, comfortable operating in a back three or a back four and capable of stepping into midfield to dictate play. For a player who spent the summer as a free agent without a club heading into the World Cup, landing at a Champions League regular like Inter on a two-year deal is a strong outcome.

As the ink nears drying on this agreement, one thing is clear: Stones’ next chapter will be written in Italian, not English.
