Golden Boot Showdown: Can Messi Hold Off Mbappé One Final Time?

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé enter World Cup final weekend locked together at the top of the Golden Boot standings on eight goals apiece — and after Saturday’s wild bronze-medal twist, Sunday’s final in New Jersey isn’t just about the trophy. It’s about who leaves North America as the tournament’s undisputed top scorer.

Few individual battles in football carry the weight of this one. Two of the greatest goalscorers the World Cup has ever seen, both former Golden Boot winners, have spent six weeks trading blows from opposite ends of the bracket — and the numbers refuse to separate them.

A Race That Simply Won’t Break

Heading into the final round of matches, Messi and Mbappé sat dead level on eight goals each, with Messi holding the narrow tiebreaker advantage on assists — four to Mbappé’s three. Even the third metric FIFA uses to split ties, minutes played, was razor close, with Messi on 620 minutes to Mbappé’s 609. It’s the tightest Golden Boot race in recent World Cup memory, and it’s been building toward this exact final-weekend collision since the group stage.

The twist: Mbappé’s chase didn’t end when France’s trophy hopes did. Saturday’s third-place playoff against England turned into an instant classic, and reports out of Miami describe Mbappé finding the net again in a match so chaotic it’s already being called one of the maddest World Cup games ever played. That result puts real pressure on Messi heading into Sunday — the Argentine captain can no longer assume the tiebreaker alone will be enough. He may need goals of his own on the sport’s biggest stage to keep the Golden Boot in his cabinet.

Why This Matters Beyond the Numbers

Both men have already tasted this individual glory before. Mbappé won the Golden Boot outright in Qatar in 2022 with eight goals, memorably capping his tournament with a final hat-trick that still wasn’t enough to lift the trophy itself. Messi, remarkably, has never actually won the award — a strange gap on an otherwise complete resume that includes World Cup titles, Ballon d’Ors, and every individual honor the sport has to offer.

There’s also a historical first in play. No player has ever won the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot in two separate tournaments. If Mbappé finishes on top again, he’d become the first man in the award’s history to repeat — a milestone that would sit alongside his status as football’s most devastating knockout-stage performer of this generation.

The Final Word

Mbappé’s involvement ended in Miami, meaning his tournament total is now fixed. That leaves Messi with one last opportunity, on the grandest stage of all, to either match or move clear of his rival before the whistle blows on his World Cup career. A goal from Messi in Sunday’s final wouldn’t just help settle the Spain-Argentina scoreline — it could be the moment that finally hands him the one prize that has somehow eluded him.

Kickoff is 3pm ET / 8pm UK time at MetLife Stadium. Whatever happens, football’s most compelling scoring duel of the decade gets its final chapter this weekend.
