NEW: Goals, Chaos& Ronaldo Makes Way

Oeiras had all the ingredients for a breezy Friday-night send-off: World Cup sunshine, Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting XI, and a sold-out Jamor buzzing with anticipation. What they got instead was a brawl, two red cards, and a halftime that will be talked about for weeks. Oh, and Portugal still won. Comfortably. Because of course they did.

The First Half Nobody Expected

Portugal dominated from the opening whistle. Rúben Dias had a header tipped away by goalkeeper Vigouroux. Rafael Leão struck the post with a fizzing effort. Ronaldo thought he’d opened the scoring, only for the flag to go up for a marginal offside. Portugal were everywhere — and yet somehow it was still 0–0 as the clock ticked into first-half stoppage time.

Then things got spicy. Very spicy.

🟥 Double Red — 45+2′ · Leão & Román Both Dismissed

A rough challenge by João Cancelo sparked a mass scuffle near the corner flag. Leão rushed in to defend his teammate — and was caught on camera throwing a punch at Chile defender Iván Román. Román reacted furiously. After a VAR review, referee Luca Zufferli sent both men off. Ronaldo himself tried to intervene with the official. It made no difference. Both sides down to ten men at the break.

As the dust settled, Roberto Martínez made a significant call: Cristiano Ronaldo — hooked at halftime. Whether it was pre-planned rotation or a tactical response to going down to ten men, the CR7 farewell tour at the Jamor ended at the whistle. Enter Gonçalo Guedes. And what an entrance it turned out to be.

Bruno Fernandes Owns the Second Half

With Ronaldo in the dressing room and Leão already showered, Portugal didn’t miss a beat. Bruno Fernandes — carrying the captain’s armband and the weight of a nation’s expectations — was absolutely magnificent. Every ball went through him. Every chance Portugal created had his fingerprints on it.

Guedes had already broken Chilean hearts in the 58th minute, latching onto a gorgeous through-ball and slotting home first-time. Then in the 75th, Francisco Conceição — electric all evening — burst down the right and cut the ball back for Fernandes, who arrowed it home with the kind of cool that would make a surgeon jealous. 2–0. Game over.

Chile pulled one back through Lucas Cepeda deep in stoppage time — a neat finish, but purely cosmetic. The full-time whistle blew moments later to a warm Oeiras roar. Portugal 2–1 Chile. Job done — albeit messily.

The Leão Question Hanging Over the World Cup

The win is wrapped up, but the real post-match talking point is this: will Rafael Leão be available for Portugal’s World Cup opener against DR Congo on June 17? Red cards in friendlies typically only trigger bans for subsequent friendlies — and Leão himself is reportedly expecting just a one-match suspension, meaning he’d miss the Nigeria warm-up on June 10 but be free to face Congo. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee, however, retains the power to extend bans to official games for violent conduct. The decision is pending. Martínez will be sweating.
