Ivory Coast Just Made History — And France’s World Cup Alarm Bells Are Ringing

The Reds have confirmed the appointment of Andoni Iraola as their new head coach ahead of the 2026-27 season, and if the reaction on X is anything to go by, Kopites are absolutely buzzing. “LET’S GOOOOOOO,” wrote one fan within minutes of the announcement dropping. “Welcome Andoni, You’ll Never Walk Alone,” posted another. The vibes at Anfield right now? Immaculate.

The 43-year-old Spaniard takes the reins from Arne Slot, who was sacked last Saturday following a deeply disappointing second season at the club — a fifth-place finish that, only 12 months after winning the Premier League title, felt like a painful step backwards. Liverpool wasted no time. The moment Slot was out the door, FSG were already on the phone.

From Bournemouth to the Big Time

If you’re not fully familiar with Iraola yet, buckle up — because this man’s story is something else.

Born in Usurbil in Spain’s Basque Country, Iraola was a right-back who spent over a decade at Athletic Bilbao before finishing his playing career at New York City FC. He moved into management with AEK Larnaca, then Mirandés, and then Rayo Vallecano — where he earned serious attention after guiding them to La Liga and holding their own against the big dogs. Bournemouth came calling in 2023, and what followed was nothing short of a masterclass in overachievement. Three seasons, a small budget, and a journey from 15th place all the way to sixth — and Europa League football — by the end of his time there. He even unearthed a string of youngsters — Junior Kroupi, Rayan, Milosavljevic — who all made the 2026 Golden Boy top 100 shortlist. At a club with one of the smallest budgets in the Premier League. Let that sink in.

Now he’s walking into Anfield with one of the biggest squads in world football and the full backing of Fenway Sports Group.

“Liverpool Is Liverpool”

When asked how he felt about the appointment, Iraola didn’t mess around with corporate speak.

“Really excited, really excited,” he said on Liverpoolfc.com. “Because obviously you know about Liverpool — you know it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world. But feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it’s a special club. You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool.”

And then, with the kind of line that wins over a fanbase instantly: “I want to become one more of you.”

Reds fans? Absolutely melting.

The Style That Anfield Has Been Craving

Here’s why this appointment has got Liverpool supporters so excited. Iraola’s football is intense, direct, and relentless — a high-pressing, high-energy style that draws inevitable comparisons to a certain German the Kop still holds close to their hearts. As Fox Sports noted, his approach “resembles the ideology that brought Liverpool so much success under Jürgen Klopp.” After a season of what many fans labelled Slot’s overly conservative tactics, the idea of Iraola’s brand of football tearing through Anfield again has the fanbase practically salivating.

The Transfer Window is About to Get Very Interesting

Iraola isn’t just arriving with a philosophy — he’s arriving with a shopping list. Reports suggest FSG are backing him with funds for at least five new signings this summer. With Mo Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konaté all having departed on free transfers, there’s serious rebuilding to do. An elite winger is the top priority, with Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig and PSG’s Bradley Barcola among the names being mentioned. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries are also on the radar.

TEAMtalk insider Graeme Bailey summed it up perfectly: “Iraola is everything they expected. FSG and Michael Edwards are hugely impressed by him. They really think it’s a fantastic fit.”

Liverpool have a new chapter. A new voice in the dugout. A new idea of what this club can be.

The Iraola era at Anfield starts now — and something tells us it’s going to be quite a ride.

⚽ Two-year contract signed. Pre-season begins in July. 📍 First US tour friendlies: Sunderland (Jul 25), Wrexham (Jul 30), Leeds (Aug 2)
