Messi is 38. Ronaldo is heading into his final tournament. The greatest generation in football history is passing the baton — and the question isn’t if the new era arrives at this World Cup. It’s who grabs it first.

Big Rom Is Back — Belgium Beat Croatia 2-0 in World Cup Warm-Up Thriller

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, kicking off June 11 across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, is the biggest sporting event in history. 48 nations. 104 matches. And a stage tailor-made for young footballers to become immortal. Every World Cup births a new superstar — Mbappé in 2018, Enzo Fernández in 2022. This summer, the throne is wide open. Here are the kids coming to claim it.

Kylian Mbappé — The Heir Who Is Already Here

Let’s start with the elephant in the room. Mbappé, 27, is the favourite to win the Golden Boot, the favourite to win the tournament, and arguably the best player on the planet right now. This might be his World Cup more than anyone else’s.

Mbappé scored 42 goals in 44 games for Real Madrid this season and arrives in North America in the form of his life. He won the 2022 Golden Boot with eight goals — and only needs five more to pass Miroslav Klose as the all-time top scorer in World Cup history. France have surrounded him with brilliant support too — Dembélé, Olise, and teenage sensation Rayan Cherki are all locked and loaded.

If Mbappé wins the Golden Boot and the trophy, this tournament becomes his forever. Full stop.

Lamine Yamal — The 18-Year-Old the World Can’t Stop Watching

Here’s the wild thing about Lamine Yamal: he is 18 years old and already the second-best player at this World Cup according to NBC Sports’ pre-tournament rankings — behind only Mbappé.

He already has six goals and 12 assists from his 26 Spain caps — and only made his international debut as a 16-year-old. At Euro 2024, he scored a stunning equaliser against France in the semi-final, won Young Player of the Tournament, and left the world speechless. Since then, he’s added two La Liga titles and two individual Laureus Awards to his growing trophy cabinet.

There’s one cloud hanging over his World Cup: a hamstring injury picked up in April. But insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed he is “expected to be ready for the World Cup” — and Spain’s fans have been losing their minds over his new blonde hairstyle, calling it “Euro Yamal energy” all over X/Twitter. The signs are good.

Spain are Group H favourites. If Yamal stays fit, he could tear this tournament apart.

The Supporting Cast That Could Steal the Show

Jude Bellingham — The most complete midfielder in world football. England’s do-it-all engine can sit deep and control a game or surge forward at will, and has been compared favourably to Zinedine Zidane. He’s been brilliant for Real Madrid this season and England will need him at his absolute peak.

Vinicius Jr. — The Brazilian winger has bagged double-digit goals in five straight seasons at Real Madrid and delights in embarrassing opposing defenders. Brazil are desperate for a sixth World Cup title, and Vini is the man they’re banking on.

Pedri — Spain’s midfield metronome and the glue that holds it all together. Spain’s latest passing heir to Xavi, Pedri has been a fitting symbol of the new generation — technically immaculate, endlessly clever, and now finally injury-free heading into a major tournament.

Rayan Cherki — The wildcard of wildcards. Cherki has carried the “future star” label since he was 15 years old. The 2026 World Cup is where he has to prove he’s no longer potential — but a decisive player for France.

The Verdict

Every World Cup creates its defining image — a moment, a player, a goal that gets replayed forever. 1998 gave us Thierry Henry. 2014 gave us James Rodríguez. 2018 gave us a teenage Mbappé. Qatar 2022 gave us Enzo Fernández.

This summer belongs to a new generation — and they are hungrier, faster, and more technically gifted than anything we’ve seen before.

Mbappé is the favourite. Yamal is the dream. But somewhere out there is a player nobody’s fully talking about yet, warming up in a tunnel in Texas or Toronto, about to introduce themselves to the entire world.

That’s the magic of the World Cup. And it starts in 8 days. 🌍⚽
