Genoa officially announced the appointment of Roma legend Daniele De Rossi as the club’s new head coach on Thursday, November 6th, 2025.
The appointment comes in time for Genoa’s crucial clash on Sunday with Fiorentina, following the dismissal of Patrick Vieira on Saturday after a winless start to the Serie A campaign.
De Rossi’s Experience and Contract Details

De Rossi played virtually his entire career with Roma and won the World Cup with Italy in 2006. This will be the Italian’s third managerial job, having previously led SPAL in Serie B, where he lasted just 4 months between October 2022 and more recently coaching Roma. The 42-year-old took over as head coach at AS Roma in January 2024 after Jose Mourinho was fired.
De Rossi has been appointed on an initial short-term contract until the end of the 2025-26 season with an option to extend if he and the team achieve Serie A survival.
This structure reflects the urgent nature of Genoa’s current situation and ties his long-term future to the club’s success in avoiding relegation.
Club Situation

Patrick Vieira left his role as Genoa head coach by mutual consent on November 1st, 2025, with the team at the bottom of Serie A.
The decision followed a dismal run of 9 league matches that yielded not a single victory, with only 3 draws, leaving the team anchored to the bottom of the Serie A table.
Domenico Criscito stepped in over the weekend to oversee Genoa’s first league victory of the season, a 2-1 win at Sassuolo that lifted them to 18th place, level on 6 points with 17th-placed Pisa, who are in the safety zone.
The club still finds itself in the relegation zone, making De Rossi’s appointment a critical moment in their fight for survival.
First Challenge
De Rossi’s debut match will be particularly challenging as Fiorentina sit in 20th place, two points behind Genoa after 10 matches, making this a direct relegation battle between two struggling sides.
Adding to the intrigue, Fiorentina themselves are also expected to have a new head coach in place for this critical fixture.
This appointment represents a significant gamble for Genoa as they look to De Rossi’s experience and tactical knowledge to navigate their way out of the relegation zone during what promises to be a difficult campaign ahead.
