Some exits sting. This one has Egypt lighting torches.

Days after Argentina pulled off a stunning 3-2 comeback to knock the Pharaohs out of the World Cup, the Egyptian Football Association wasn’t ready to let it go quietly. In a fiery statement, the EFA declared it “cannot remain silent regarding the refereeing decisions witnessed during the match against Argentina as well as the failure to make appropriate use of the Video Assistant Referee system.” Translation: Egypt believes they were robbed, and they’re not done talking about it.

The moment that started it all

Rewind to the 58th minute in Atlanta. Egypt were up 1-0 and about to make it two, with Mohamed Salah splitting the Argentina defense to tee up Mostafa Zico, who slotted home and ripped off his shirt in wild celebration. Cue the gut-punch: VAR pulled referee François Letexier to the monitor over a challenge that happened almost a full pitch away, deep in Egypt’s own half, where Marwan Attia had lightly tugged Lisandro Martínez’s shirt and clipped his foot. Goal chalked off.

Egypt somehow doubled their lead anyway through Zico nine minutes later, but the psychological damage was done — and it would come back to bite them.

Then the collapse

Argentina, needing a miracle with 20 minutes left, produced one. Cristian Romero, Messi, and a stoppage-time header from Enzo Fernández turned 2-0 into 3-2 in the space of 13 minutes, sending the defending champions through to the quarterfinals. Salvo the outrage: replays showed Alexis Mac Allister appeared to yank an Egyptian shirt in the box just before Argentina’s winner — and VAR never even looked at it.

Even the pundits couldn’t agree

This wasn’t just Egyptian fans coping. Fox’s own broadcast team split down the middle live on air. Former England keeper Rob Green called the disallowed goal call absurd, insisting the foul was “barely anything… a full pitch away” from where the goal was scored. Fox’s officiating expert countered that the letter of the law technically allowed it.

Alan Shearer piled on afterward, posting that “either both are fouls, or neither is.” Ian Wright pointed to a separate, uncalled shirt-pull on Salah as proof of inconsistency. When the people paid to explain VAR can’t agree on VAR, you know Egypt has a case.

The fallout

Egypt’s coach Hossam Hassan didn’t hold back either, suggesting officials “wanted to keep the world champion in the competition” — a wild, if unproven, accusation that’s kept conspiracy chatter alive across timelines all week.

It got heated enough on the touchline that Egypt’s goalkeeping coach was sent off and had to be physically restrained from confronting the referee.

Where it leaves things

Officially, Egypt’s campaign ended with history made: their first-ever World Cup win, first knockout appearance, and Salah becoming the nation’s all-time leading World Cup scorer. Unofficially, the story of Egypt’s tournament isn’t the achievement — it’s the ending. And with the EFA now on record demanding answers, this one isn’t fading from football Twitter anytime soon. Whether FIFA responds with anything more than silence of its own is the next chapter everyone’s waiting on.
