Messi Refused to Let the Story End Like That

There are World Cup nights, and then there’s what happened in Atlanta. Argentina 3, Egypt 2. On paper, a routine round-of-16 scoreline. In reality? One of the wildest, most emotional twenty minutes this tournament has produced — and Lionel Messi was right at the center of it, refusing to let his story end with a whimper.

Let’s set the scene. Egypt came out swinging. Ibrahim Yasser’s header gave the Pharaohs an early lead, and things got worse for Argentina fast — Messi, of all people, stepped up to a penalty that could’ve leveled things and blazed it wide. For a man who buried the biggest kick of his life in the 2022 final shootout, missing this one stung. He later admitted to feeling “intense anger” in that moment. Fair enough — the whole football world felt it with him.

Then Mohamed Salah, still magic at 33, slipped Mostafa Ziko through to make it 2-0. Egypt were dreaming. Their fans were roaring. The defending champions looked shaky, sluggish, human. On top of that, a VAR review disallowed another Ziko goal, and Egypt were left convinced the officiating gods weren’t on their side — a complaint their manager Hossam Hassan would repeat loudly after the final whistle, calling it “injustice.”

But here’s the thing about Messi: you can knock him down, you can make him miss, you can have the whole internet calling the World Cup “rigged” for him — and he’ll still find a way to answer.

With barely a third of the match left, Argentina finally woke up. Cristian Romero powered in a header in the 79th minute to make it 2-1, and the Albiceleste could smell it now.

Four minutes later — the 83rd minute — Messi struck. A clean, ice-cold finish to level it at 2-2, his eighth goal of the tournament and his 21st World Cup goal all-time, extending his own record. Cameras caught him in tears afterward, and honestly? Who could blame him. This is a 39-year-old man, in what’s almost certainly his last World Cup, dragging his country back from the brink with pure will.

But Argentina weren’t done. Deep into stoppage time — the third minute, to be exact — Lautaro Martínez whipped in a cross, and Enzo Fernández rose above everyone to head home the winner. 3-2. Game over. Egypt’s dream, gone in the cruelest way possible. Three goals in thirteen minutes. A comeback for the history books.

Egypt will feel hard done by — and honestly, the VAR drama around that disallowed goal deserves every bit of scrutiny it’s getting. But football doesn’t care about “what should’ve been.” It cares about who has the heart to keep fighting when the walls are closing in. Messi and Argentina had it. Egypt, brilliant as they were, ran out of time.

This is why we watch this game. This is why we believe. Even when you miss the penalty. Even when you’re staring down elimination. Even when the whole world seems to be against you — you keep swinging, because your moment might still be thirteen minutes away.

Argentina march on to the quarterfinals to face Switzerland. Egypt go home with their heads held high, and Salah’s international career possibly closing on the biggest stage of them all.

Man of the Match: Messi
