NEW: The Wall from Bilbao: Unai Simón Just Rewrote World Cup History

While the world was busy watching Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup bow, one man quietly pulled off something even Ronaldo couldn’t get past: Unai Simón just became the hardest goalkeeper to score against in World Cup history.

Let that number sink in — 609 minutes. That’s over ten and a half hours of World Cup football, across six straight matches, without a single ball crossing his line. To put it in perspective, that’s more than six full 90-minute games played back to back without conceding once. Spain’s win over Portugal didn’t just send Ronaldo home — it also smashed a 36-year-old World Cup record that had stood since Italia ’90.

Here’s the wild part: Spain wasn’t even trying to be untouchable when this streak started. It kicked off almost by accident back in the 2022 World Cup, in a Round of 16 stalemate against Morocco that Spain actually lost on penalties. Fast forward to this tournament, and Spain opened with a surprising scoreless draw against plucky Cape Verde, then reeled off four consecutive shutout wins to storm into the knockouts. Simón broke the old record of 517 minutes during a comfortable 3-0 dismantling of Austria to kick off the knockout round — and he wasn’t done. He extended it again on Monday, going the distance against Portugal to push the mark to 609.

And this wasn’t a quiet, uneventful clean sheet either. Ronaldo — a man who once tortured Spain with a World Cup hat-trick — had his moments. In the first half, Simón had to produce two big saves off Ronaldo’s boot, including a stunning mid-air, reach-back stop with both hands after João Félix flicked a header into Ronaldo’s path. That single save might be the difference between Ronaldo getting a fairytale ending and getting nothing at all.

The record Simón just broke had been shared for over three decades by two legendary defensive units: Italy’s 1990 side, built around the iconic Walter Zenga, and Switzerland’s stingy backline from 2006 through 2010. Both had gone five consecutive matches without conceding. Spain didn’t just match that mark — they blew straight past it to six, and Simón’s individual streak now stands alone as the longest in the tournament’s history.

What makes this even more remarkable is how understated Simón has been about it. He wasn’t overworked through most of the run — he’d made only four saves all tournament heading into the Portugal match, with Austria not managing a single shot on target against him. But when Portugal actually tested him, he delivered exactly when it mattered most.

Spain now roll into the quarterfinals unbeaten, unscored-upon in six, and looking like a team built on an ironclad foundation rather than just flashy attacking football. They’ll face the winner of USA-Belgium next, and if Simón keeps this streak alive even one more match, he’ll be doing something no goalkeeper in the history of this tournament has ever done.

Attackers of the world, consider yourselves warned.
