NEW: Haaland Torments Brazil: The Night Norway Buried the Five-Time Champions

Some nights, football doesn’t just crown a winner — it writes history in blood and thunder. On a muggy Sunday at New Jersey’s MetLife-adjacent battleground, Erling Haaland didn’t just score two goals. He tore the soul out of Brazil, ended Carlo Ancelotti’s fairytale before it began, and stamped his name at the very top of the Golden Boot race. Final score: Norway 2-1 Brazil. But numbers alone can’t capture what really happened here.

For over an hour, this game simmered. Brazil, the five-time champions, came in as favorites, carrying the weight of a 24-year wait and a manager in Ancelotti hired specifically to end it. Norway, the plucky underdogs making their first-ever World Cup quarterfinal appearance, absorbed pressure, weathered a missed penalty from Bruno Guimarães that goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland brilliantly saved, and waited for their moment.

Then, in the 79th minute, Erling Haaland happened. Andreas Schjelderup, introduced at halftime and immediately electric, whipped in a cross. Haaland — all 6-foot-5 of him — rose above Gabriel Magalhães like he was reaching for something only he could see, and powered a header past Alisson Becker. MetLife went silent. Brazil’s dream cracked.

If that goal was a warning shot, the second was the execution. In the 90th minute, Schjelderup found Haaland again, this time with a pass rather than a cross, and the Norwegian let fly with a ferocious left-footed drive from outside the box that gave Alisson absolutely no chance. 2-0. Game over. Norway, sensational.

Brazil got a consolation — and a piece of history — deep into stoppage time. Neymar, brought on in the 67th minute for what is very likely his final World Cup appearance, converted a penalty after Leo Østigård was penalized for an elbow on Casemiro. It made Neymar only the second Brazilian ever to score at four different World Cups, joining a certain Pelé. But consolation is the word — it changed nothing about the result, and everything about how this tournament will be remembered in Brazil.

Because make no mistake: this is a national earthquake. Brazil’s exit is their earliest since 1990, when Argentina knocked them out in the Round of 16. This also marks the sixth straight World Cup in which European opposition has ended Brazil’s dream — Norway now joins Croatia, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands on that painful list. Ancelotti’s magic touch, so often decisive at club level, couldn’t save the Seleção this time.

For Haaland, this was simply the latest chapter in a story that keeps getting more absurd. Seven goals now at this World Cup, level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé at the summit of the Golden Boot race. He’s scored in 14 consecutive competitive internationals for Norway — 27 goals in that run alone. This is a man playing a different sport right now.

Norway march on to a first-ever World Cup quarterfinal, where England await in Miami on July 11 after edging Mexico 3-2 in a five-goal Azteca classic. Haaland versus England’s backline. Golden Boot on the line. Book your seats — this is must-watch football, and Norway’s fairytale shows no signs of slowing down.
