ONE LAST GUT PUNCH BEFORE THE PARTY

Chicago showed up. 63,636 fans packed Soldier Field on a muggy Saturday afternoon — flags waving, faces painted, pure World Cup energy cracking in the air. The USMNT’s last home send-off before co-hosting the biggest tournament on earth. The vibe? Absolutely electric. The result? Germany 2, Party 1.

Man United vs Man City Preview: Old Trafford Hosts the First Manchester Derby of the Season

Two Minutes. Silence.

Kai Havertz hadn’t even broken sweat when Germany broke Chicago hearts. Joshua Kimmich whipped in a precise free-kick from the right, and Havertz — fresh off scoring in Arsenal’s Champions League final just seven days earlier — powered an unmarked header past Matt Freese. The clock read 2:00. Soldier Field went deathly quiet.

But here’s what made this USMNT worth watching: they didn’t flinch. Not for a second.

The Goal That Broke the Internet

Minute 36. A Pulisic corner gets headed clear. The ball drops perfectly to Antonee Robinson — Fulham left-back, World Cup debutant, part-time superhero. He doesn’t think. He just swings. A ferocious first-time volley from 23 yards grazes the crossbar on its way into the roof of the net. Baumann doesn’t move. Nobody does. Then Soldier Field absolutely erupts.

Robinson — nicknamed “Jedi” after announcing his Star Wars fandom at age five — celebrates with a full somersault backflip. His teammate Tyler Adams reportedly told him afterwards: “Can you save that for next weekend?”

“I was thinking that we were lucky — to face a situation where we concede to Germany with top players? It’s an amazing challenge to see how we react, how we show character.” – Mauricio Pochettino, post-match

At half-time the stats were jaw-dropping: USA 9 shots, Germany 4. USA 8 corners, Germany 1. Pochettino didn’t change a single thing at the break. He didn’t need to.

Sané Plays the Villain

The second half was tight until the 57th minute, when Havertz — quietly excellent all afternoon — dropped deep, received the ball and played a velvet lay-off to Leroy Sané. The Galatasaray winger drilled it low. It deflected off Miles Robinson and crept past Freese. Cruel. Clinical. Germany 2–1.

The USMNT pushed hard in the final half-hour — Brenden Aaronson was denied by Baumann from outside the box — but they couldn’t find the leveller. Germany held firm through six minutes of stoppage time, extending their winning streak to nine matches heading into the World Cup.

Worried? Don’t Be.

The scoreboard says defeat. The performance says something else entirely. Pochettino called it “an even game” — and he had a point. The USMNT out-shot, out-cornered and largely matched a top-10 ranked side. The concern is the defending: conceding inside two minutes, four games in a row now with multiple goals allowed. With Chris Richards still out injured, Paraguay will have noticed.

But the character? The belief? The Robinson volley? That’s a team that knows who it is. The World Cup is four days away. Bring it on. 🇺🇸🔥
