The Most Wanted Man in Football: Why Everyone Is Fighting Over Julián Álvarez

“Arsenal are one game from completing the first unbeaten Champions League campaign since — no one. It has never been done.”

Paris Saint-Germain arrive as the team everyone feared. Champions last season after humiliating Inter Milan 5–0 in Munich — yes, five-nil — Luis Enrique’s side have become Europe’s most feared attacking force. Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, lines up alongside the irresistible Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the gifted Désiré Doué in a front three that would give any defence nightmares. If PSG win tonight, they become only the second club in Champions League history to successfully defend the title — following Real Madrid’s legendary three-peat between 2016 and 2018. The pressure? Immense. The hunger? Even greater.

But do not — do not — sleep on Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s Gunners arrived in Budapest as freshly-crowned Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years, and they have been absolutely imperious in Europe. Eight wins from eight in the league phase — a 24/24 haul that no other side managed. They dismantled Atlético Madrid in the semis and have conceded a miserly six goals in the entire tournament. David Raya, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães: this is a backline that makes football boring in the very best possible way. Viktor Gyökeres, Bukayo Saka, and skipper Martin Ødegaard carry the attacking threat for a squad emboldened by finally, after years of near-misses, knowing what winning feels like.

“They now have the taste of winning,” said Saka before the final. Ødegaard, his captain’s armband already engraved into Arsenal folklore, simply nodded.”

There is recent history and bad blood to add spice. Last season, PSG knocked Arsenal out in the semis — winning 3–1 on aggregate, a result that stung deeply. Arteta’s squad have since evolved, grown harder and more clinical. Tonight is the rematch nobody asked for but everyone wanted.

Injury intrigue sharpens the tactical puzzle. Achraf Hakimi is a doubt for PSG after a hamstring problem, potentially pushing Warren Zaïre-Emery to right back. Dembélé was forced off in PSG’s final league game with a calf concern but has reportedly declared himself fit — his presence could be decisive. On the Arsenal side, Arteta has a selection headache at right back after Jurriën Timber only returned to training this week following two months out.

The biggest prize in club football. A potential Premier League hat-trick of European trophies — Aston Villa winning the Europa League, Crystal Palace the Conference League, and now Arsenal on the brink. One game. 90 minutes. Budapest holds its breath.

Arsenal are the only side to have gone through the entire Champions League league phase unbeaten, finishing on a perfect 24 points from 8 games — and are now one match from completing a historic unbeaten campaign. UEFA Champions League

Dembélé — the Ballon d’Or winner — was forced off in PSG’s final Ligue 1 match with a calf concern, but has stressed he is fit to start alongside Doué and Kvaratskhelia in attack. Pain in the Arsenal

The match carries extra weight for English football: if Arsenal win, it would complete a Premier League clean sweep of all three UEFA club trophies this season — an extraordinary achievement. ESPN
