Match Overview

Scotland secured a dramatic 4-2 victory over Denmark in extra time at Hampden Park on November 18, 2025, with goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean sealing their automatic qualification and first World Cup appearance since 1998.

This winner-takes-all clash in Group C of the UEFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, marked by spectacular goals, dramatic momentum swings, and a breathless finish, produced one of the most memorable matches in Scottish football history.

First Half Drama

Scotland got off to a dream start after just four minutes when Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay executed a sensational overhead kick to break the deadlock.

The early goal sent Hampden Park into raptures and gave the home side the perfect platform. However, Scotland suffered a blow when the lively Ben Doak, who had assisted McTominay’s opener, was forced off with a muscle injury after 20 minutes.
Doak’s departure quickly changed the momentum as Scotland struggled to get out of their defensive third while Denmark piled on the pressure.

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund crashed the ball home from close range, but his effort was quickly ruled out for a push on Aaron Hickey in the build-up. Scotland held their slender 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Second-Half Turnaround

Denmark’s persistence paid off when Rasmus Hojlund equalized to level the match. The stadium atmosphere shifted dramatically as Scotland’s World Cup dreams appeared to be slipping away. The game became increasingly tense as both sides pushed for the decisive goal.

The match took another crucial turn on the hour mark when Rasmus Kristensen picked up his second booking, reducing Denmark to 10 men. This proved to be the turning point Scotland desperately needed. The hosts took advantage through substitute Lawrence Shankland, who poked home from a yard out to restore Scotland’s lead.

The drama was far from over. Denmark leveled once again when Patrick Dorgu stroked home a low effort minutes later, demonstrating remarkable resilience despite being a man down. At 2-2, Denmark appeared to be holding on for the draw that would secure their World Cup qualification.

Extraordinary Finale

As the game entered added time at the end of the second half, and with Denmark hanging on, Tierney curled a sensational effort from outside the box beyond Kasper Schmeichel to lift the roof off Hampden.
The Arsenal defender’s 25-yard strike was nothing short of spectacular and put Scotland on the brink of World Cup qualification.

Denmark pushed hard for a third equalizer in the dying moments but was caught off guard when McLean picked up the ball in his own half and unleashed a shot from the halfway line, which bounced into the net with Schmeichel well off his line to wrap up the victory. The extraordinary goal from the halfway line sealed one of the most remarkable finishes in World Cup qualifying history.

Significance and Aftermath

STV News reports that victory over the Danes means Steve Clarke’s side topped Group C with 13 points, successfully qualifying after six failed campaigns and going through as group winners for the first time since 1982.
Scotland sealed a return to the World Cup for the first time since 1998, ending a 28-year absence from football’s biggest tournament.

Denmark finished in second place with 11 points and will have to continue their quest for a World Cup spot through the UEFA playoffs, which will involve 15 other European nations in March 2026, with only four tickets at stake. For a team that had been unbeaten throughout qualifying and needed only a draw, this represented a crushing disappointment.

The match will be remembered as one of the greatest nights in Scottish football history, featuring an overhead kick, two world-class long-range goals in stoppage time, and the end of a nearly three-decade wait for World Cup football. Scotland will now participate in the 2026 World Cup across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, joining an expanded 48-team tournament.
