Brentford vs Chelsea: A Cagey Start

Chelsea began with purpose. Pedro Neto had the first chance, but Caoimhín Kelleher made a strong save. Still, Reece James and João Pedro were unavailable, and Danny Welbeck struggled to link up with Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers. Jordan Henderson made his Chelsea debut against the club he joined them from, and 16-year-old Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli later made his first appearance from the bench. The first half ended goalless, and Chelsea could feel fairly satisfied.
Set Pieces Punish Chelsea Again

Then came the corner. Mikkel Damsgaard’s delivery was nodded across by Jannik Schuster, and Jaidon Anthony headed home unmarked from a few yards out. It was soft and painfully familiar. Chelsea have conceded 23 Premier League goals from set pieces since the start of last season, the highest figure in the division.
Thiago and Carvalho Finish the Job

Chasing an equaliser, Chelsea moved to a back four and left gaps. Kevin Schade broke through, Emiliano Martínez saved his one-on-one, but Igor Thiago struck from close range to end a seven-game goal drought.

Then, deep in added time, Schade’s cross was deflected kindly into the path of Fábio Carvalho, who fired home at the far post. Brentford became the first team to stop Chelsea scoring this season.
The Numbers Behind the Result

Chelsea had the ball, but Brentford had the chances. Chelsea held 59 percent possession, yet expected goals were 2.65 for Brentford against 0.82 for Chelsea, with six shots on target to two. Possession without a cutting edge is just passing in circles.
What Alonso and Colwill Said

Captain Levi Colwill admitted Chelsea were bullied at set pieces and said the team cannot rely on its front three to rescue them.

Alonso said his players competed well for 45 minutes, then dropped off after the break. He agreed the problems go beyond set pieces, into duels, defending and build-up play. Chelsea have not kept a single clean sheet in the league this season.
What’s Next for Chelsea?

The Blues sit on seven points from five games, and their next match is at home to Bournemouth on Saturday, October 10. The long international break gives Alonso time to fix the marking, the midfield balance and the dead-ball defending. One bad Friday night does not end a season, and Chelsea fans will keep believing. But faith without fixes goes nowhere, and Brentford just showed how a well-run club gets it done.
