Just when it looked like Real Madrid were about to hand Barcelona the initiative at the top of La Liga, Carlos Espi did what he does best. The substitute struck in the first minute of stoppage time to snatch a dramatic 3-2 win at Elche, a result that keeps Jose Mourinho’s side firmly in the title conversation but only after surviving a genuine scare at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero.
A Perfect Start Turns Into a Nervy Finish

Real Madrid looked comfortably in control for large parts of this one. Arda Guler’s curling free-kick found the back of the net in the twenty-fifth minute after cannoning in off Elche goalkeeper Matias Dituro, an unfortunate own goal that gave the visitors an early lead they thoroughly deserved.

Kylian Mbappe then doubled the advantage in the thirty-third minute, finishing off a slick move set up by Yan Diomande, and at that point the match looked like a routine away day for the league’s title favorites.

Elche, however, had other ideas. Sitting near the bottom of the table with just two points from their opening matches, the home side desperately needed something to build on, and they found it in the second half. Abiel Osorio pulled one back in the seventy-first minute with a close-range header from Lucas Cepeda’s cross.

Just seven minutes later Fer Nino leveled things at 2-2 with a sharp finish from the edge of the box. Suddenly, a comfortable Real Madrid victory had turned into a genuine relief job for Mourinho’s men.
Espi Delivers the Decisive Blow Once Again

This is becoming something of a habit for Carlos Espi. The forward had already announced himself with a last-gasp winner on his Real Madrid debut against Espanyol on the opening weekend of the season, and he repeated the trick almost identically here. With the clock ticking into stoppage time and Elche sensing a shock result, Espi finished from close range after being teed up by Mbappe to complete the turnaround and send the small pocket of traveling Real Madrid fans into raptures.
The Numbers Tell Their Own Story

Real Madrid dominated the underlying statistics throughout, winning the expected goals battle by a wide margin and producing twenty shots to Elche’s eleven. Yet only four of those efforts actually tested the goalkeeper, a reminder that even the best sides in Europe can make life harder for themselves than it needs to be. Guler was deservedly named player of the match for his role in creating the opener and generally dictating the tempo from midfield.
What This Result Means

The win moves Real Madrid level on points with Barcelona at the summit of La Liga, keeping the pressure firmly on their fiercest rivals heading into the next round of fixtures. For Elche, the second-half response will offer some genuine encouragement despite the disappointment of falling agonizingly short, proof that they are capable of testing even the division’s biggest names when they commit to attacking football.

Mourinho will take the three points gladly, but this was far from the routine victory the first-half scoreline suggested it might become. In a title race this tight, moments like Espi’s stoppage-time strike could end up mattering more than anyone realizes right now.
