Forget the sceptics who wanted to write off this Arsenal side before a ball was even kicked at Portman Road. On Tuesday night, Mikel Arteta rolled the dice with nine changes and three academy teenagers, and Arsenal answered every doubt with a thrilling 4-2 win over Ipswich Town to march into the Carabao Cup fourth round. The headline, though, belonged to one name: Max Dowman.
Dowman Steals the Show on His First Start

Just sixteen years old and making his first start of the season, Dowman needed only seven minutes to light up Portman Road. He nicked possession, drove at the Ipswich defence, and slid the ball past Cedric Kipre before slotting into the bottom corner. It was the kind of goal that makes scouts reach for their phones.

Two minutes into the second half, he did it again, controlling Martin Zubimendi’s pass inside the box and coolly finishing for his second of the night. Arteta had publicly challenged Dowman before kickoff to earn his minutes rather than simply be handed them. Message received, loud and clear.
Madueke and Merino Pile on the Pressure

Arsenal were not finished there. Noni Madueke doubled the lead in the sixteenth minute with a clinical volley after Bruno Guimaraes won the ball back and Merino teed him up. Merino then got in on the act himself just before the hour mark, placing a tidy finish in off the post to make it 4-0 and put the tie to bed long before the final whistle.
Ipswich Refuse to Go Quietly

Credit where it is due, Ipswich did not simply roll over. Anis Mehmeti pulled one back with a close-range finish to give the home fans something to cheer, and

Former Gunner Chuba Akpom added a stoppage-time consolation to make the scoreline look tighter than the match ever really felt. It was a spirited response from a Championship side that had heard plenty of pre-match noise about their heavily rotated opponents.
A Night That Says a Lot About Arsenal’s Depth

With five teenagers on the pitch at various points and a lineup missing most of its regular starters, this was as much a statement about Arsenal’s academy pipeline as it was about progressing in a cup competition. Marli Salmon partnered Gabriel at the back, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Zubimendi filled in at full-back, and the collective performance oozed the kind of tactical intelligence Arteta has been building at Emirates Stadium for years. The late Ipswich goals will likely serve as a coaching point on defensive organisation once so many fresh faces are thrown together, but nobody at Arsenal will be too concerned given the result.
What This Result Means Going Forward

The win sends Arsenal into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and, more importantly, offers Arteta genuine selection headaches in the best possible way. Dowman’s performance will only intensify the hype already building around him, and it is hard to imagine this being his last involvement in a matchday squad this season. For Ipswich, the pride of a late fightback offers a small crumb of comfort, but the gulf in overall quality was clear from the opening whistle to the last.

Arsenal fans will be buzzing about Dowman’s name for weeks to come, and on this evidence, they have every reason to be.
