Manchester United marked their long-awaited Champions League comeback the only way that matters, with a statement win. Old Trafford roared back to life as Michael Carrick’s side dismantled Azerbaijani champions Sabah FK 4-0, and the result gives United fans genuine reasons for excitement heading into a massive weekend.

Man United 4-0 Sabah: How the Goals Went In

United wasted little time settling the nerves of a crowd that had not seen European football at Old Trafford in nearly three years. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the 27th minute, tapping home a Patrick Dorgu cross to get the Champions League party started.

Bruno Fernandes doubled the lead soon after, finishing off a slick team move that began with Bryan Mbeumo winning the ball back in midfield.

Just before halftime, Benjamin Sesko rounded the goalkeeper and slotted into an empty net, turning a comfortable lead into a commanding one. Lisandro Martinez added the fourth in the second half, converting from a goalmouth scramble to complete the rout.

It was United’s biggest Champions League win to open a campaign since a 5-0 demolition of Panathinaikos back in 2003-04, a stat that will excite anyone who remembers what United’s European nights used to look like at their peak.

Carrick’s Champions League Record Stays Perfect

This was Michael Carrick’s second match in charge in the competition, and he remains unbeaten, having previously guided United to a 2-0 win at Villarreal as interim boss back in 2021. Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Carrick did not downplay the significance of the night. “It’s nice to keep a clean sheet and obviously win the game. Some of the football we played was really good, dangerous on transition,” he said, while also crediting Sabah for making things difficult. “I have to give them a lot of credit, they were difficult to play against. The result looks comfortable, it wasn’t always like that.”

Carrick reserved special praise for Kobbie Mainoo, calling the midfielder “a fantastic player” with “a massive influence on our games,” adding that he is “a real joy to have” given his hunger to improve.

A Clean Sheet and a Confidence Boost Before the Derby

Just as important as the four goals was the clean sheet, United’s first of the season, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens untroubled behind a defense that finally looked settled. That solidity, paired with a dominant attacking display, gives United genuine momentum heading into Sunday’s Manchester derby against City, a fixture that will test whether this performance was a turning point or a one-off.

Sabah manager Valdas Dambrauskas was gracious in defeat, admitting his side would leave Old Trafford with mixed feelings. “We started quite well and I didn’t feel that we were shaking or scared,” he said, noting his team tried to play throughout but ultimately came up short against a sharper opponent.

What This Win Means for United’s Season

United’s Champions League campaign continues with tough away trips to Atletico Madrid and Como still to come in October, so Carrick was quick to temper expectations even in victory. Still, after a mixed start to the Premier League season, a clinical, four-goal performance against continental opposition is exactly the platform United needed. If Sunday’s derby brings a similar level of intensity and precision, Old Trafford could be witnessing the start of something considerably brighter for the Red Devils.

Man of the Match: Patrick Dorgu
