NEW: Ballon d’Or 2026 Nominees: The Full Shortlist And Why This Race Is Wide Open

Football just handed us its most loaded shortlist in years. On Tuesday, September 8, France Football dropped the official Ballon d’Or 2026 nominees list, and the timing could not be sweeter. Fresh off a World Cup summer that produced heroes, heartbreak, and history, thirty men and thirty women now step into the room to hear their names called for the sport’s most prestigious individual prize. The winners get crowned in London on October 26, breaking a tradition that has lived in Paris since 2019, all in tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the very first Ballon d’Or winner, seventy years on.

PSG’s Domination Is Almost Unfair

Reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain didn’t just make the cut, they flooded it. Ten of the thirty men’s nominees wear that badge, led by defending Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele. He’s chasing back-to-back glory, but he’s already pointed the spotlight at his own teammate, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, calling him PSG’s best shot this year. When the champion himself is hyping a rival for his own trophy, you know the race is real.

Messi Chases History, Ronaldo Gets Left Out

Here’s where the story gets emotional. Lionel Messi, now at Inter Miami, forced his way back onto the list after a stunning World Cup run with Argentina. This marks his seventeenth career nomination, just one shy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s all-time record of eighteen.

The twist nobody saw coming: Ronaldo is nowhere on the 2026 shortlist. For the first time in what feels like forever, one half of football’s greatest rivalry is watching from outside the room.

The Favorites Chasing Gold

Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal headline the conversation as usual, joined by Real Madrid teammates Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior, giving Los Blancos four horses in the race.

Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane enters with a monster case of his own, having produced seventy-three goals across club and country this season.

Manchester City and Barcelona’s newest addition Rodri returns too, riding the momentum of a Golden Ball-winning World Cup with Spain.

The Women’s Race Just Blew Wide Open

Injuries have knocked three-time reigning champion Aitana Bonmati clean off the shortlist, and that single absence changes everything. Barcelona still has strength in numbers through Ewa Pajor, Patri Guijarro, and Caroline Graham Hansen, but Alexia Putellas enters as one of the biggest storylines of the year after her move to London City Lionesses. OL Lyonnes star Melchie Dumornay, Bayern Munich’s Pernille Harder, and Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw all carry real claims too. History says a new name could lift this trophy, only the fifth different winner ever.

Beyond The Main Prize

The night carries more weight than just two trophies. Lamine Yamal chases a third straight Kopa Trophy for young talent, Arsenal’s David Raya headlines the Yashin Trophy race for goalkeepers, and Spain’s Luis de la Fuente leads a nearly all-Spanish Coach of the Year shortlist. PSG and Barcelona both enter as favorites for Club of the Year, hunting continued dominance on both sides of the game.

Final Word

This is not a coronation, it’s a genuine contest, and that’s exactly what makes the Ballon d’Or 2026 nominees list worth talking about. Mark October 26 on your calendar, because London is about to host one of football’s most unpredictable nights in years.
