When and Where the Ballon d’Or 2026 Shortlist Drops

The official nominees for both the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or land between 11:00 and 16:00 CET (10:00 to 15:00 Nigerian time) via France Football’s channels and the official Ballon d’Or website. Thirty players make the men’s list, another thirty make the women’s list, and from there an international panel of journalists will whittle it down to a single winner at the ceremony on Monday, October 26.

Why the 2026 Ceremony Is Different

For the first time in its 70-year history, the Ballon d’Or gala is leaving Paris. London hosts the show this year, a tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the very first player ever crowned with the trophy back in 1956. It is a fitting way to mark the award’s 70th anniversary, and it gives the night an extra layer of historical weight.

Twelve Categories, One Huge Night

This is not a one-trophy event anymore. Alongside the headline men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or awards, France Football will confirm shortlists for Men’s and Women’s Young Talent of the Year, Men’s and Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year (the Yashin Trophy), Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year, Men’s and Women’s Club of the Year, plus the Striker of the Year awards. Twelve categories in total, each with its own shortlist size and its own storylines.

Who’s Leading the Race So Far

With a World Cup freshly wrapped up in North America and Spain lifting the trophy, the men’s race feels wide open. Rodri enters as an early favourite after being named the tournament’s standout player.

But he will have serious competition from names like Ousmane Dembélé, the defending champion, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, and Lamine Yamal.

Lionel Messi also remains firmly in the conversation, his eight World Cup goals for Argentina outweighing a quieter club season in MLS. On the women’s side, expect Barcelona’s influence to dominate again, with Alexia Putellas and Claudia Pina tipped as early frontrunners.

The Nigerian Angle: Where Osimhen and Lookman Stand

For Nigerian football fans, the big question is whether Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman make the cut. Osimhen’s goal contributions for Galatasaray in Europe have kept his name circulating in shortlist projections, and reports suggest he could feature among the 30 nominees again.

However, most pundits agree neither he nor Lookman is being tipped as a genuine contender for the top prize this year, with the conversation dominated by Europe’s biggest club names.

Why This Year Feels Unpredictable

Unlike previous editions where one name towered above the rest, 2026 has a genuine cluster of contenders. Between a World Cup shake-up, a stacked Champions League field, and a ceremony leaving its usual home for the first time ever, this Ballon d’Or race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in years.
