NEW: Gasperini Makes Roma History: Only Third Manager to Win 8 Straight Serie A Games

Gian Piero Gasperini has done it again. After a dramatic late comeback against Atalanta, the Roma head coach has etched his name into club folklore, becoming only the third manager in AS Roma history to win eight consecutive Serie A matches. For a club with over a century of history and legends like Spalletti and Garcia on the touchline, that is no small feat.

How the Streak Was Built

Gasperini’s run did not start this season. According to Opta, the streak is a carryover masterpiece: Roma closed out last season with five straight wins, beating Bologna, Fiorentina, Parma, Lazio, and Verona in succession.

Fast forward to the new 2026-27 campaign, and Gasperini’s side picked up exactly where they left off, thrashing Fiorentina and Lecce 4-0 apiece before edging a pulsating 2-1 win over his old club, Atalanta, at the Stadio Olimpico. Add it up, and that is eight wins in a row across two seasons, an achievement that now places Gasperini alongside an elite group of Roma coaches.

The Company He’s Keeping

This is where the story gets genuinely special for Roma fans. The only two managers to have ever matched or beaten this run are club legends. Luciano Spalletti tops the list with an 11-match winning streak between 2005 and 2006, plus another run of eight in 2016.

Rudi Garcia follows with 11 wins in 2013 and 9 more in 2014. Gasperini now sits on the podium with them, a remarkable stat line for a coach still just over a year into his Roma tenure.

A Statement Win Over Atalanta

Sunday’s victory was anything but comfortable, which somehow makes it even more impressive. Roma dominated the opening 45 minutes, firing off 18 shots in the first half alone, their highest tally in a single opening period since December 2017. Yet Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi stood firm, and Éderson’s powerful strike gave the visitors a second-half lead that threatened to end Roma’s run right there.

Gasperini’s response showed exactly why he is thriving at the club. He made a string of bold substitutions, withdrawing Donyell Malen, who had been Roma’s standout performer, and bringing on Nahuel Molina, Matías Soulé, Santiago Castro, Daniele Ghilardi, and Leonardo Balerdi.

The gamble paid off spectacularly. Mario Hermoso equalized in the 89th minute, and deep into stoppage time, Matías Soulé collected the ball, feinted past his marker, and finished left-footed to send the Olimpico into raptures.

Top of the Table and Just Getting Started

The win moves Roma level on points with Inter at the summit of Serie A, and after eight goals scored and none conceded across their first two matches of the season, the Giallorossi are quietly building a case as genuine title contenders for the first time since 2001. Gasperini himself has stayed grounded despite the milestone, praising his squad’s resilience rather than dwelling on the history books.

With Roma unbeaten, in red-hot form, and now boasting one of the greatest winning runs in club history, the question every Serie A fan is asking is simple: can Gasperini’s men actually go the distance and end Roma’s 25-year wait for the Scudetto? On this evidence, nobody should bet against them.
