Newcastle 2-0 Tottenham: Elanga and Wissa Send Jaissle’s Magpies Soaring as Spurs Sink to the Bottom

Matthias Jaissle waited only two games for his first taste of Premier League glory, and he could not have picked a sweeter venue to get it. Newcastle United traveled to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and left with a statement 2-0 win, condemning Roberto De Zerbi’s expensively assembled Spurs side to a second straight defeat without a single goal to their name. If anyone still doubted the direction Newcastle are heading in the post-Eddie Howe era, this result answered the question in emphatic fashion.

A Slow Burn That Exploded After the Break

For a half, this looked like it might go the home side’s way. Tottenham controlled large spells of possession and tested Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek through Mathys Tel and Jan Paul van Hecke, both denied by smart saves. Antonin Kinsky briefly fumbled at the other end, but Newcastle weathered the pressure and regrouped at the interval with the game still goalless.

The second half belonged entirely to the visitors. In the 62nd minute, Anthony Elanga turned brilliantly inside the box after latching onto Amar Dedic’s cushioned header, and his left-footed effort cannoned in off the post to send the away end into raptures.

Ten minutes later, the contest was effectively over. Substitute Nick Woltemade rose to nod a corner back across goal, and Yoane Wissa produced a stunning acrobatic finish over his shoulder to double the advantage and silence a stadium that had emptied well before the final whistle.

Elanga and Wissa Are Finally Delivering

Few storylines this season are as compelling as the resurgence of Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa under their new head coach. Both players struggled to find consistent form under Eddie Howe, yet since Jaissle’s surprise appointment, the pair has looked reborn. Elanga followed up his goal in the opening-day draw with Liverpool by striking again here, while Wissa notched his first Newcastle goal in style.

Their head coach is clearly unlocking something in this Newcastle attack that had gone missing, and Tyneside is taking notice.

Tottenham’s Nightmare Start Deepens

For Tottenham, this defeat piles further pressure on a club that has spent more than three hundred million pounds rebuilding its squad over the summer. Despite that outlay, and a home debut for loan signing Omar Marmoush, Spurs have now failed to score in their opening two league matches for the first time since the 1992-93 season.

Sandro Tonali was substituted to jeers from his own supporters, and De Zerbi now faces mounting questions after a chastening opening block of fixtures that began with a heavy loss at Brentford.

What Comes Next

Newcastle’s win lifts them into the early-season top half of the table and sends a message that life without Eddie Howe may not be the step backward some feared. Jaissle’s tactical approach, built on patience and a willingness to strike late, has yielded two wins from his first two competitive matches in charge.

Tottenham, by contrast, must find answers quickly before frustration around the club turns into a genuine crisis. Both sides now turn to their midweek fixtures knowing the pressure levels could not be more different heading into the next round of Premier League action.
