Manchester United’s search for a long-term answer at left-back has taken a dramatic turn, with the club now closing in on Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde in the closing days of the summer transfer window. After months of frustration, chasing targets who either stayed put or priced themselves out of reach, United appear to have found a genuine opening, and this one might actually get done.
Why United Turned to Balde

For most of the summer, Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall sat at the top of Michael Carrick’s left-back wishlist. That pursuit has stalled badly. Newcastle have slapped a price tag exceeding £68 million to £70 million on the 21-year-old and shown zero appetite to sell, especially after already losing key figures like Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes this summer.

With Hall effectively off the table, United’s recruitment staff pivoted quickly to Balde, and it did not take long to see why. The 22-year-old Spain international has over 150 appearances for Barcelona, three goals, and 21 assists to his name, and independent data models rate him as the stronger overall player compared to Hall. For a club desperate to solve a position that has plagued Luke Shaw’s injury-hit tenure for years, Balde looks like an upgrade rather than a stopgap.
The Barcelona Situation Is Turning in United’s Favor

The real twist came when Hansi Flick left Balde out of Barcelona’s matchday squad entirely for their La Liga opener against Elche. That decision was widely read as confirmation that Barcelona are ready to let him leave, and it appears to have accelerated everything.

According to multiple Spanish outlets, Balde has now given his agent, the influential Jorge Mendes, the green light to negotiate an exit. Mendes has reportedly already informed Balde of Manchester United’s interest, and reports out of Spain suggest Old Trafford is the destination that genuinely excites the player, ahead of interest from clubs in Italy and elsewhere in England.

Barcelona are said to be holding out for a fee in the region of 40 to 50 million euros, and while United have not yet lodged an official bid, contact with Balde’s camp is already underway.
What a Deal Would Mean for Both Clubs

For Manchester United, landing Balde would finally put an end to a left-back search that has dragged on for seasons and cost the club several failed pursuits along the way. Coming off the back of their agreed £70 million deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, a Balde signing would round out a busy and ambitious final stretch of the transfer window for INEOS and Carrick’s rebuilding project.

For Barcelona, cashing in on Balde would free up funds at a club still hunting for a new center-forward after missing out on Julian Alvarez earlier in the window. With Joao Cancelo already arriving as competition at left-back, Balde’s route to regular minutes at Camp Nou had narrowed considerably, making an exit increasingly logical for all parties.
What Happens Next

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, all eyes are now on whether United’s expected opening bid will be enough to satisfy Barcelona’s valuation, or whether a prolonged back-and-forth will push this deal to the wire. Given how quickly the situation has shifted in just a matter of days, do not be surprised if Alejandro Balde is wearing red at Old Trafford before the window shuts.
