Barcelona kicked off their La Liga title defense in the most emphatic way possible, thrashing Elche 5-0 away at the Estadio Martinez Valero on Sunday, August 23. Two goals apiece from Raphinha and Fermin Lopez, plus a debut strike from new signing Karim Adeyemi, sent a clear message to the rest of Spanish football before matchweek two had even finished: Hansi Flick’s side are chasing a third straight title, and they are not slowing down.
Raphinha Sets the Tone Early

The rout started inside the opening quarter of an hour. Fermin Lopez slid a brilliant first-time through ball into Raphinha’s path, and the Brazilian was hauled down inside the box by Elche defender Victor Chust. Raphinha picked himself up, dusted himself off, and calmly stroked the penalty past goalkeeper Matias Dituro to give Barcelona the lead after 14 minutes.
It was the perfect early statement, and Elche, who finished 15th last season, never recovered.
Adeyemi Debuts With a Goal, Barcelona Cruise Before Half-Time

New arrival Karim Adeyemi did not need long to endear himself to the Camp Nou faithful. The German winger doubled Barcelona’s advantage right on the stroke of halftime, finishing off a delightful setup from Raphinha to make it 2-0 heading into the break. A goal on your league debut is about as good a first impression as it gets, and Adeyemi delivered exactly that.

Barcelona controlled the tempo throughout the first half, managing the game comfortably while Elche struggled to create anything of note at the other end.
Gordon’s Instant Impact and a Second-Half Demolition

The second half turned into a showcase for Barcelona’s attacking depth. Substitute Anthony Gordon, another summer arrival and a former Newcastle United winger, needed only minutes to make his mark. He teed up Raphinha for his second goal of the afternoon, then turned provider again moments later to set up Fermin Lopez for Barcelona’s fourth.

Lopez was not finished. The Spanish international, who endured a difficult summer after missing out on Spain’s World Cup triumph through injury, added his second and Barcelona’s fifth late on, finished off by a clever assist from teenager Xavi Espart, who impressed throughout in an otherwise heavily rotated Barcelona lineup.

By full time, the scoreline read a resounding 5-0, Barcelona’s biggest win of the fledgling La Liga campaign and a performance that immediately put the league on notice.
What It Means for Barcelona’s Title Defense

Flick made wholesale changes to his usual starting eleven, handing opportunities to fringe players like Espart, and the response could not have been better. Even with key faces rested and Lamine Yamal visibly frustrated at being substituted in the second half, Barcelona barely broke stride.

The result also arrived with a pointed subplot. Real Madrid, under Jose Mourinho, had needed a late winner just to squeeze past Espanyol 2-1 a day earlier. Barcelona’s ruthless demolition of Elche was a reminder to their fiercest rivals that the Catalans intend to defend their crown without hesitation.

Barcelona’s recent dominance over Elche continued too, extending an imposing record against the Franjiverdes stretching back well over a decade. With a striker search reportedly still ongoing behind the scenes, questions remain over squad depth up front. On this evidence, though, Barcelona do not appear to be missing much at all.
Next up for Flick’s side is a home clash against Athletic Club, another early test of just how serious this title defense really is.
