NEW: Man City Close In On Ayyoub Bouaddi: Inside Football’s Most Electric Teenage Transfer Saga

Manchester City fans have spent the summer watching Enzo Maresca rebuild a midfield without its Ballon d’Or winner standing in it. Now the club appears to have found its answer, and it isn’t a proven Premier League name — it’s an 18-year-old who spent his World Cup terrorising senior international midfields wearing the colours of Morocco. Ayyoub Bouaddi to Manchester City has gone from persistent rumour to genuine formality, and the details emerging are enough to make any football fan sit up.

From Lille’s Academy to the World’s Biggest Stage

Bouaddi’s rise has been almost absurdly fast. A academy product at Lille with 96 senior appearances already banked before his 19th birthday, he spent the 2025-26 season establishing himself as one of Ligue 1’s most complete young midfielders, racking up 35 starts across the league and Europa League.

Then came the World Cup, where he became one of the tournament’s breakout stars, helping Morocco reach the quarter-finals before a narrow exit to France. His World Cup debut against Brazil at MetLife Stadium was a statement in itself — 87 touches, 60 accurate passes, and three successful dribbles against one of the sport’s most decorated nations, according to post-match data. Data analytics firm SciSports rates his SciSkill potential at 132.3, a figure bettered by only a handful of players on the planet, including City’s own Erling Haaland.

Personal Terms Done, Lille Talks Ongoing

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Bouaddi and his camp have already reached an agreement on personal terms with Manchester City, with reports pointing to a contract running through 2031. Romano’s reporting suggests Bouaddi’s own preference is to complete the move immediately rather than wait until 2027, adding real urgency to a deal that has quietly become one of the summer’s most contested transfer battles. Arsenal, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Manchester United have all been credited with interest at various points, but City are understood to have pulled clear of the chasing pack.

The remaining sticking point, as with most transfers of this size, is money. Lille have been holding out for a fee in the region of €100 million, while City are reportedly working to land the deal closer to the €70-90 million range. Given that City already broke their transfer record this summer to sign Elliot Anderson for £116 million from Nottingham Forest, Lille appear to be benchmarking their asking price against that very deal — a smart, if slightly cheeky, negotiating tactic.

Why Bouaddi Solves City’s Biggest Problem

The urgency behind this signing makes perfect sense once you consider what’s happening elsewhere at the Etihad. Rodri, City’s midfield general and reigning Ballon d’Or winner, is being strongly linked with a move to Barcelona, leaving a gaping hole at the base of Maresca’s midfield. Sources close to the club say City’s interest in Bouaddi is not contingent on Rodri’s departure, but the timing tells its own story — this is a club preparing for life after arguably the best defensive midfielder in the world, and doing so by investing in the position’s long-term future rather than a short-term fix.

If completed, Bouaddi would become City’s fifth summer signing and potentially the most expensive teenager in football history. For a fee this size, the pressure will be enormous. But based on what Morocco fans already know, the pressure has never seemed to bother him yet.
