NEW: Super Falcons Heartbreak: Nyadjou Wondergoal Ends Nigeria’s WAFCON Title Defence

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will not be defending their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations crown after all. A single moment of brilliance from 19-year-old Myriam Maeva Nyadjou sent Cameroon through to the WAFCON 2026 semifinals, ending the defending champions’ campaign 1-0 at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday.

One Moment of Magic Decides It All

The Super Falcons started the quarterfinal exactly the way their fans hoped, flying out of the blocks and forcing Cameroonian goalkeeper Michaely Bihina into an early save inside the opening minute. Nigeria dominated the ball and pinned Cameroon back, but the Indomitable Lionesses gradually found their footing and delivered the decisive blow against the run of play.

In the 19th minute, Nyadjou stepped up to a free-kick from long range and curled an unstoppable strike into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie with absolutely no chance. It was one of the standout goals of the entire tournament, and it proved to be the only one Cameroon needed.

Nigeria Push, But Bihina Stands Tall

To their credit, the Super Falcons refused to go down quietly. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade shifted out to the right wing as head coach Justine Madugu reshuffled her attack, and her dangerous deliveries caused problems for Cameroon throughout the first half. Gift Monday came agonizingly close to an equalizer when she met an Ajibade cross but could not get clean contact, allowing Bihina to make the save.

The second half turned into a near-total siege. Nigeria dominated possession and territory, but Bihina was inspired between the posts. She denied Uchenna Kanu’s volley, punched away a dangerous Michelle Alozie free-kick, and then produced arguably the save of the match, somehow keeping out a point-blank header from Kanu that looked destined for the net. Substitutes Esther Okoronkwo and Toni Payne, introduced in Madugu’s search for a spark, both tested Bihina further, with Okoronkwo’s own free-kick effort needing an athletic save from the Cameroonian shot-stopper as Nigeria kept probing for a way through a resolute defense that simply refused to break.

A Painful Ending With History on the Line

Nigeria entered this quarterfinal as ten-time African champions chasing an unprecedented 11th title after topping Group C with a statement 6-2 win over Egypt. That form counted for little in Casablanca, where the Indomitable Lionesses produced a disciplined, well-organized defensive performance to hold on for the full ninety minutes.

The defeat carries consequences well beyond the trophy itself. Only the four teams that reach the WAFCON semifinals earn automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, and Cameroon’s win books their place alongside Morocco and Algeria. For Nigeria, the road to Brazil now runs through the alternative qualification pathway, starting with a Thursday clash against South Africa in Casablanca for a spot in the Inter-Confederation playoff tournament.

What Comes Next

It is a cruel exit for a Super Falcons side that many expected to reach the final once again, but women’s football on the continent continues to close the gap, and Cameroon’s win is proof of that growth. Nyadjou, still a teenager, has announced herself on the biggest stage, while Bihina’s heroics in goal will be remembered as the difference between the two sides.

For now, attention turns to Thursday’s playoff decider against South Africa, a match Nigeria simply cannot afford to lose if their World Cup dream is to stay alive.
