It took Atlético Madrid just 50 seconds to turn Tuesday night at the Metropolitano into a nightmare for Manchester United. On October 13, Pablo Barrios scored the fastest of starts, Leny Yoro was sent off, and Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman came off the bench to seal a 2-0 Champions League win that leaves Michael Carrick under serious pressure.
Barrios Scores, Then Points to the Sky

Before kickoff, Atlético fans unfurled a banner telling supporters to defend what they love. Then Álex Baena slipped in behind United’s defence and cut the ball across for Barrios, whose shot Ayden Heaven could not keep from crossing the line after just 50 seconds. Barrios held up six fingers as a tribute to captain Koke, whose mother died on Tuesday morning. Koke did not play, and Barrios said the win was for Koke and his family on a very hard day.
United Fight Back, Without Reward

To their credit, United responded. Atlético should have scored more. Johnny Cardoso had a goal ruled out for handball, and the hosts twice hit the woodwork, including a Grimaldo free kick that clipped the angle of post and bar. United won more corners, five to two, but Atlético had five shots on target to their four. Carrick also withdrew Bruno Fernandes early with one eye on the weekend.
Yoro Sees Red, Lookman Finishes It

The game turned in the 74th minute. Leny Yoro was shown a straight red card for a last-man challenge on Jonathan David, a decision Sports Mole called incredibly soft.

Five minutes later, Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman came off the bench and added the second to end the contest.
Carrick in the Spotlight

The defeat extends United’s winless run to five games in all competitions. It follows their worst domestic start in 40 years, with their lowest points total after six league games since 1986. Next up is a trip to Leeds on Sunday. United are seventh in the Champions League table on three points after beating Sabah 4-0 on matchday one.
Atlético’s First Win of the Campaign

For Diego Simeone’s side, it was the perfect reply to a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on matchday one. Barrios was named man of the match, and the win lifts Atlético to 13th after two games.
