The Ramon Vega FIFA presidency story is not one anybody had on their football bingo card. Yet here we are. The former Tottenham defender has announced his candidacy and is the first person to confirm a challenge to Gianni Infantino. A defender is stepping up to the biggest striker in world football politics, and he is wearing shin pads.
Who Is Ramon Vega?

The 55-year-old is a former Switzerland international who also played for Celtic and Watford, and he has worked in finance since retiring in 2004. His pitch is dramatic. He says football is in the emergency room and needs fundamental reform at FIFA.
Why Now? Infantino Under Fire

The timing is no accident. Infantino faces criticism after a failed attempt to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation called for him to quit.

The Swiss FA, from the country that hosts both FIFA and UEFA, became the latest federation to withdraw its support.

The associations of England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales have done the same. Infantino has not blinked. He said last month he is fully committed to leading FIFA.
The Five-Federation Hurdle

Here is the catch. Vega needs five of FIFA’s 211 member federations to back him just to appear on the ballot, and he fell short in both 2015 and 2019. The nominations must be filed before 18 November, and L’Équipe reports he does not yet have the required five. Inside World Football says more than five federations sympathised with him in 2019, but they feared reprisals. Federations that dropped Infantino have not automatically switched their support to Vega. He must also pass an eligibility check by a review committee.
Infantino Is Still the Favourite

Do not crown anyone yet. Infantino, who announced on 30 April that he will seek a fourth term, remains the clear favourite with nearly 90 vote pledges.

Potential rivals include Victor Montagliani, Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa, Dariusz Mioduski and FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström.

UEFA says it wants a respected, unifying figure to run against Infantino, and it will not be Aleksander Ceferin. Vega may turn out to be the opening act in a bigger show, though that is our reading, not a fact.
Even Blatter Has an Opinion

Here is a plot twist worth a chuckle. Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter responded on social media, calling Vega an interesting candidate with a diverse background. Yes, that Blatter.
