Nigeria, we need to talk. On Tuesday 29 September 2026, the Super Eagles travelled to Bissau and lost 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau in an Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifier. Three goals conceded, none scored, and a whole football nation staring at the ceiling. Yes, it was that kind of night.
How the Super Eagles Lost to Guinea-Bissau

Nigeria arrived in confident mood after a 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar in Uyo. Guinea-Bissau, fresh from beating Tanzania 2-0, arrived hungry. It showed. The hosts pressed high from the first whistle, and Stanley Nwabali was busy early.

Dju broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with a curling finish into the far corner. Nigeria had no answer after the break. Balde doubled the lead in the 66th minute, and Djalo sealed it deep into stoppage time. George Ilenikhena had a late chance to pull one back, but the Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper stopped him from close range in the 87th minute.
Why Nigeria Struggled

Tactical reports pointed to a familiar list of problems. Nigeria moved the ball nicely in midfield but could not pull Guinea-Bissau’s block out of shape. Nobody consistently occupied the space between midfield and attack, and reports noted the side missed a clear reference point up front without Victor Osimhen. The gap between midfield and defence was often too big, and the full-backs were exposed on quick counters.

Chelle did not hide from it. He said Guinea-Bissau were more aggressive and showed more personality, and he admitted the team stopped pushing after a spell of early intensity. He also apologised to the fans, though he mentioned the poor pitch too.
What the Defeat Means for Group L
This hurts beyond the three points. Guinea-Bissau now lead Group L with six points and a strong goal difference, while Nigeria sit second on three with a negative one. Analysts also warn that the 3-0 result gives Guinea-Bissau an edge in any head-to-head comparison if the race comes down to these two sides.

Nigeria still have four group games left, including the return fixture against Guinea-Bissau on home soil. The next chance to respond comes in November, when the Super Eagles face Tanzania in a double-header.
Fans React on X

Supporters did not hold back. Many called it a national disaster, others said they had never imagined losing 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau. The anger is loud because the pride is real. Nigerians love this team fiercely, and love demands better.
Can the Super Eagles Recover?

Absolutely. One bad night in Bissau does not erase three AFCON titles or the talent in this squad. Chelle has said this is not the end and that Nigeria must give Guinea-Bissau the same hostile conditions in the return leg. Every great comeback story starts with a painful chapter, and this one is written in ink, not stone.
