Spanish football has never been short of drama, but this one has left the pitch entirely. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been summoned to a Madrid court after Barcelona took legal action over his claims about rigged refereeing. El Clasico just got a courtroom sequel.
What Did Florentino Perez Say About Barcelona?

It all began at a press conference on May 12. Speaking about the Negreira case, Perez called it the most serious corruption scandal in football and argued that Real Madrid had been robbed. He said Madrid could have won twice as many league titles as their seven, claiming the others were stolen. He repeated the message in an interview the next day and declared the relationship with Barcelona completely broken.
Why Did Barcelona Sue Florentino Perez?

Barcelona heard those words as accusations of theft and fraud. Vice-president Rafael Yuste accused Perez of resorting to infamy and promised to meet him in court. On June 12, the club filed a mandatory conciliation claim, the required first step before a criminal complaint for slander under Article 205 of Spain’s Penal Code. The demand is simple: retract the statements or face criminal charges.
What Is the Negreira Case?

Barcelona are accused of paying roughly 8.4 million euros between 2001 and 2018 to a company owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, a former vice-president of the referees’ committee. Barcelona deny any wrongdoing and say the money paid for reports on referees. One report notes that bribery charges against the club were dismissed in 2024, yet the affair still divides Spanish football.
What Happens on November 25?

Perez and Barcelona are due at Courts 1 and 2 in Madrid at 9:40 a.m. Here is what to watch:
- If Perez retracts his comments, Barcelona will withdraw the lawsuit.
- If he refuses or fails to appear, Barcelona will file the criminal slander complaint.
- Until then, this remains a preliminary procedure, not a trial.
How Has Real Madrid Responded?

Madrid are hitting back on several fronts. On June 17, the club sent a report on the Negreira case to UEFA and requested disciplinary measures against Barcelona. Reports also mention a dossier of around 500 pages, and Madrid’s lawyers have reportedly requested documents on Barcelona’s compliance system from 2010 to 2018. This fight has clearly moved well beyond a war of words.
Why This Matters for La Liga

Two clubs that share 120-plus years of rivalry are now trading legal filings instead of just goals. With the first Clasico of the season reportedly set for October 25, the tension will follow both teams onto the pitch. Whatever happens in court, the reputations of two footballing giants are on the line.
