Nigeria’s Super Eagles produced a heart-stopping comeback to defeat Madagascar 2-1 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, opening their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with three crucial points and a healthy dose of revenge for a painful 2019 memory.
Madagascar Stun the Home Crowd Early

Few inside the Nest of Champions expected the visitors to strike first, but Madagascar did exactly that in the 16th minute. Clement Couturier rose highest to head home a pinpoint cross from Ryan Ponti, silencing the Uyo faithful and sending a jolt through a stadium that had come expecting goals from Nigeria, not against them. For long stretches of the opening half, the Super Eagles struggled to break down a disciplined and well-organized Madagascar defense, and a goal that appeared to have leveled the score through Alex Iwobi in the 33rd minute was chalked off after a foul by Akor Adams on goalkeeper Geordan Dupire.
Ilenikhena Announces Himself on Debut

Nigeria needed a spark, and it arrived in the most dramatic fashion possible. In the first minute of first-half stoppage time, debutant George Ilenikhena latched onto a brilliant pass from Alex Iwobi and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to level the score at 1-1. It was the perfect introduction to international football for the young forward, and it completely shifted the momentum heading into the break. Few debuts in recent Super Eagles history have arrived with better timing or bigger stakes.
Usor Completes the Turnaround

Eric Chelle wasted no time making his mark from the touchline, introducing Moses Usor and Moses Simon shortly after the restart. The substitution paid off almost instantly. In the 65th minute, Usor drove at the Madagascar defense, beat his markers, and fired past Dupire to put Nigeria ahead for the first time in the match. From there, the Super Eagles managed the game intelligently, bringing on Taiwo Awoniyi and Tolu Arokodare to shore up the closing stages and see out a hard-fought 2-1 victory.
A Win Soaked in Redemption

This result carried weight far beyond three points. Madagascar’s Barea shocked the football world by beating Nigeria 2-0 at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, a defeat that still stings in Nigerian football folklore. Coming from behind to beat the same opponents on home soil, in the opening match of a new qualifying cycle, gives this victory a satisfying redemption arc that Super Eagles fans will be replaying for weeks.
What It Means for Group L

The win also carries serious tactical importance. With co-hosts Tanzania having already secured automatic qualification for the 2027 tournament in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, only the best-placed team among Nigeria, Madagascar, and Guinea-Bissau will claim Group L’s remaining ticket. Guinea-Bissau announced their own intentions with a 2-0 win over Tanzania on the same day, meaning Nigeria currently sit second in the standings behind the Group L pacesetters.

Nigeria will not have long to enjoy the win, with an away trip to face Guinea-Bissau already scheduled for Tuesday, September 29. For Eric Chelle, this opening victory is an early marker of a Super Eagles side capable of grinding out results even when things do not go to plan, a trait that could prove decisive as this qualifying race unfolds.
