The wait is over. Nigeria’s Super Eagles have officially opened camp, and the countdown to a defining qualifying window has begun.
Camp Officially Opens in Uyo

Head coach Eric Chelle and his full technical crew touched down at the team’s base in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, on Monday, September 21, kicking off preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Super Eagles’ official channels confirmed the news as early arrivals from the squad began checking in alongside the coaching staff, with more players expected to link up once their weekend club matches wrapped up. The Four Points by Sheraton in Uyo, a familiar base for the national team, is once again expected to house the squad throughout the window.

This is more than routine housekeeping. Every AFCON qualifying camp sets the tone for how far Nigeria can go, and with Group L wide open, getting the preparation right from day one matters enormously.
First Training Session and the Road Ahead

Chelle put his players through their first organized session on Tuesday, September 22, with the opening fifteen minutes opened up to the media, a rare glimpse into how the three-time African champions are shaping their game plan. Selected players will also front up for media interviews later in the week as the buildup intensifies. Expect plenty of focus on tactical organization, set pieces and attacking combinations as Chelle fine-tunes a squad packed with quality across the pitch.
The Fixtures That Matter

Nigeria opens the campaign against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, September 25, before an immediate turnaround for a trip to face Guinea-Bissau four days later on September 29.

Madagascar’s Barea have already arrived in the country, adding an extra layer of anticipation to a fixture that promises a raucous atmosphere from the home crowd. Two matches in five days is a tough ask, but it is also a genuine opportunity for Nigeria to grab maximum points early and take control of Group L on the road to the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
A Squad With a Familiar Sting

The biggest talking point heading into camp is the absence of Victor Osimhen, ruled out after the Galatasaray striker picked up a muscle strain, with Taiwo Awoniyi drafted in as his replacement.

Even without their talisman, Chelle still has serious firepower to call on, including Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams and Tolu Arokodare leading the attacking line. Captain Wilfred Ndidi anchors the midfield, while Alex Iwobi and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali add experience and leadership to a squad determined to start this qualifying cycle on the front foot.
Why This Window Is Bigger Than Two Matches

For a nation with AFCON in its blood, every qualifying window carries weight, but this one arrives with extra urgency after recent near misses. A strong start against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau would not just bank points, it would send a message that Chelle’s Super Eagles mean business from the very first whistle. All eyes are now on Uyo.
